Suspendarea discutiilor dintre FMI si Ungaria nu s-a datorat unor subtilitati adanci ale politicilor macro de reducere a deficitelor, ci propunerii guvernului maghiar de taxare a activelor bancare cu 0,45%. Aplicarea acestei taxe ar fi urmat sa aduca la buget 720 milioane de euro anual.
Asadar, tandemul UE/FMI, a suspendat discuţiile cu Ungaria, trimiţând forintul şi aşa slab, mai în jos.Această taxă asupra hoţilor a provocat nemulţumirea reprezentanţilor FMI/UE.
Imprumuturile FMI/UE au ca scop controlul total al ţărilor care fac apel la ele, de unde şi cerinţa lor aparent absurdă pentru “măsuri de austeritate”. În felul în care acestea sunt impuse, ele nu duc decât la suferinţa poporului vizat, căci nu are cum să îi fie mai bine dacă un sfert din spitale se închid, salariile se taie cu tot atât, iar alte zeci de mii de oameni îşi pierd serviciile! Popoarele sunt sacrificate în mod expres, pentru a provoca haosul economic şi social.
Principalele 6 banci din Ungaria (Raiffeisen International, Erste Group, Bank Austria, UniCredit, Intesa Sanpaolo si BayernLB) au trimis disperate e-mailuri lui DS-Kahn in care amenintau ca isi vor reconsidera investitiile in Ungaria si prin urmare, criza o sa se adanceasca. In respectivele e-mailuri mai solicitau ca FMI sa intervina pe langa guvernul maghiar pentru a nu se aplica taxa in cauza. FMI a intervenit, guvernul maghiar a zis ca nu si lucrurile s-au impotmolit. Amenda de 2.5 milioane de dolari pentru vanzarea de bumbac modificat genetic
Grupul agro-chimic Monsanto va trebui sa plateasca o amenda de 2,5 milioane de dolari pentru vanzarea neautorizata de bumbac modificate genetic, a anuntat Agentia pentru Protectia Mediului (EPA). Aceasta este cea mai mare sanctiune de acest tip.

Firma a lansat doua soiuri de bumbac modificat genetic pentru a rezista la insecte, Bollgard Monsanto si Bollgard II, desi EPA a interzis in mod specific aceste culturi. Compania a vandut bumbacul in perioada 2002 - 2007, conform Le Monde.

Cultivarea bumbacului modificat genetic pentru a-si produce propriul pesticid este interzisa in 10 regiuni din Texas. EPA nu vrea ca insectele sa devenina rezistente la aceste produse.

Cele doua soiuri de seminte de bumbac contin pesticide numite "protectie incorporata in plante", inclusiv bacteria Bacillus thuringiensis, care este unul dintre cele mai utilizate insecticide in agricultura ecologica.

Autorităţile poloneze anchetează dacă "ceaţa artificială" ar fi putut provoca accidentul aviatic din aprilie, care a dus la moartea preşedintelui Lech Kaczynski şi a altor 95 de persoane. Avionul s-a prăbuşit pe când încerca să aterizeze pe aeroportul din Smolensk pe o ceaţă deasă. Ceaţa, care s-a intensificat rapid înainte de sosirea avionului, a redus vizibilitatea la sub 200 m, mult sub minimul recomandat de 1000 m.

Polonia doreşte acces la fotografiile prin satelit ale SUA, care ar putea arunca o nouă lumină asupra condiţiilor meteo din timpul accidentului, scrie ziarul polonez Gazeta Prawna.
Procurorii doresc să fie ajutaţi de experţi americani să afle dacă "există capacitatea ştiinţifică şi tehnică de a genera ceaţă artificială". Experţii polonezi încearcă să stabilească cauza tragediei, iar ceaţa artificială este una dintre variante.

Anchetatorii polonezi mai doresc ajutorul SUA pentru a stabili dacă cineva ar fi putut influenţa instrumentele avionului de la distanţă şi orice informaţii culese în ziua de 10 aprilie. Polonezii vor să descopere dacă serviciul de informaţii al armatei americane a înregistrat conversaţiile de pe telefonul satelit al avionului, ca parte a reţelei de monitorizare a semnalelor NATO.

Teoria conspiratiei este alimentata si de faptul ca procurorii militari polonezi au dezvaluit, in urma cu o luna, ca centrul meteorologic nu ar fi informat pilotii despre ceata de la Smolensk si nu a urmat procedurile standard legate de conditiile meteo, potrivit "Rzeczpospolita".
Echipajul Tupolevului a primit un raport meteo la ora 7.27 a.m., care descria starea vremii din urma cu peste doua ore (ora 5.00 a.m.). Conform acestui raport, conditiile meteo si vizibilitatea in Smolensk erau bune. Un raport privind faptul ca vizibilitatea a scazut la 500 de metri a fost trimis pilotilor de-abia la ora 8.25. Echipajul nu a confirmat, insa, primirea acestuia. Avionul prezidential trebuia sa aterizeze la Smolensk la ora 8.23 a.m., insa ora 8.41 - la care un jurnalist polonez a trimis un sms catre redactie - este considerata ca, foarte probabil, ora prabusirii.

Prepare for solar storms, climate changes, and a pole shift into an Ice Age: The warnings came from every corner of the globe in the form of mythology not just NASA.

William Gaspar, M.D. in Taos, New Mexico counseled a decade ago, "The Ankh symbolizes the North polar axis shift or the movement of the ‘Tree.' When the Cosmic Tree stands tall and becomes stable, then we can celebrate the renewal of life, the creation of a New World in essence. The [World] Tree itself becomes the tool of the creator to allow renewal of all life forms after the fire, earthquakes, absence of the sun in the sky from volcanic ashes, and the flood subsides."

Of course, we were also warned by the shamans not to clear-cut the canopy forests and vines in the jungles of the Amazon to raise the cattle for cheeseburger corporations. For these green fields were the living lung bronchioles of the earth. Yet we ignored the indigenous wisdom keepers when they counseled that we were spiritually barking up, as well as scientifically stripping down, the wrong tree: The World Tree.

Then the UFOs came to us in 1947 after we sent them mushroom cloud smoke signals that the apes on earth were armed and dangerous, playing passionately but without a license, with the elements of fire gods: nuclear weapons in WWII.

For example, an ethnobotanist, Terence McKenna (1946-2000), issued an expert opinion in what must have been then a legal court document, California UFO, 2:2 (1987), subtitled Oversoul Takes Shape in an Archetypal UFO, to wit:

Adrian Gilbert added in Signs in the Sky, "The placing of the Ankh, or key of life, into the lock is connected with the movements of the sun and the precession of the equinoxes. For the last 13, 000 years or so, the constellation of Orion and in particular his ‘hand' has been drifting steadily north. Today it is in its most northerly position before it begins to move south again in a rhythmic cycle that takes 26,000 years to complete. As a result the sun now occupies the ‘shake-hands' position over the outstretched hand of Orion exactly at the summer solstice. I see this as indicating that the opening of the stargate with the Ankh will occur around this time."

Of course, psychoanalyst C. G. Jung came to this same conclusion that I did too ultimately: myth is fact and matter is mind. Without a doubt, we were supposed to slow down our society in 2010, not speed-it-up, exchange ecology for economy, barter for more shiny objects with the earth's natural resources anymore. We had enough trinkets and widgets. The goal now was to synchronize our head and heart through meditation techniques to reduce stress hormones and boost our immune systems to handle the higher levels of radiation clearing our chakras of negative memories and opening our third eye. It was all about updated solar-powered streams of information now available from the Suns Behind the Sun: Galactic Center.
Robert Keith Wallace, Ph.D., an avid researcher of meditation benefits reported in The Physiology of Consciousness: "In terms of DNA the optimal state of physiological functioning is one in which there is a fully integrated and unimpeded flow of information from the DNA to all parts of the body."

Anthropologist Jeremy Narby, Ph.D. said as much in The Cosmic Serpent: DNA and the Origins of Knowledge, "DNA is approximately 120 times narrower than the smallest wavelength of visible light." That means our physical body is made of light that is "invisible" to our physical eye: Meditate on that idea a moment. I mean reality is relative to the eyes of the beholder, called the observer-effect in physics today.

That was the key to our own survival: Let go of the emotions that bound us to old belief systems about "reality" and go with the flow of events. Don't hang on to the past nor project into the future. Live in the moment with our sixth-sense instinctual sensitivity wide-open to ideas, images, feelings presented to us that fit the circumstances now.
Mythologist and physicist J. Nigro Sansonese confirmed in The Body of Myth: Mythology, Shamanic Trance, and Sacred Geography of the Body, "Meditation can be compared to a radical emptying of awareness. When sensations, emotions, and thoughts have been eliminated, suppressed, or simply ignored, the awareness of the meditator turns naturally upon the ‘resting voltage' of the central nervous system (CNS)." In plain terms, our autobiography is written by the starlight flowing in and out of our CNS and DNA-built body cells continuously; the genetic memory traces of lessons-learned by reincarnations: past, present, and future!

A shock came when we realized our human consciousness originated and is in an intimate relationship with the Sun. Dr. Gary Schwartz, formerly University of Arizona professor of medicine, neurology and psychiatry, now a sun-worshipper, reported: "The sun itself may be alive, expressing a living code [of consciousness] in the visible and invisible flames that extend from its core and reach to the far corners of the universe," in The Living Energy Universe.

Our Sun is but the largest "planet" in our solar system is the esoteric truth to the wisdom teachings of the pharaohs, and also the near-death experiencers. This is meant literally. The tunnel of light vortex is a main artery-arterial-into the heart of heaven, the inner space of our Sun, as well as those stars within Galactic Center. Apostle Paul wrote in a letter dated circa 50 A.D., "There are also celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial: but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another. There is one glory of the Sun, and another glory of the Moon, and another glory of the Stars: for one star differeth from another star in glory. So also is the resurrection of the dead." (I Corinthians 15:40-42)

To the point: Our Sun is alive and conscious of us. All of her myriad life forms from the smallest to the largest are cut from the same archetypal, blueprint pattern of solar energy, a fabric woven together into a single living organism billions of years ago. German biophysicist Fritz Albert Popp confirmed as the mystics, prophets, shamans centuries before him: "We know today that man is essentially a being of light."

If so, why were we dimwits before the pole shift? We felt trapped in a universe that was considered made from "dead" matter and cold hard facts that translated into negative thoughts and feelings, emotions from the past!

These negatively-charged concepts drained our solar cell batteries but Dr. John James had the proper diagnosis: "When a person has an emotional block the client will feel trapped between two opposing yet unequal forces that are acting simultaneously inside him. Exactly as Tejman describes for energetic matter, these forces are like ‘two loops that are in perpetual competition.'"

So our task has always been the same: Learn how to set our cells free from the coagulation of solar plasma filaments that have created both our physical and spiritual bodies of light

In other words, our mission was to achieve what I called Christ-Centered Consciousness: the opening of our third eye. This happened naturally like celestial clockwork every 26,000 years at the turning point of The Great Year. Thus the Egyptian and Mesoamerican Sunstone Calendars mapped not only the alignment of the north-south brain hemispheres of our sun, earth, and galaxy plane but also our human east-west (right-left) brain hemispheres with it that are constantly seeking centering with the Suns Behind the Sun. The billions of stars flittering like leaves above our heads at the Galactic Center of The Cosmic Tree.

Hence, the purpose of the Zodiac: It is a circular schematic of the sky and its stellar energy aspects contained in that region not unlike a color palette used by a painter. This is what Norman Paulsen's NDE revealed to him in that regards, as he contemplated his predicament after falling 30-feet to the ground headfirst from a power pole in California. The first thing he noticed was that he wasn't dead rather, "I am standing stationary in the air, high above the familiar coastline of Santa Barbara. There, far below, waves on the surface of the ocean are moving inward toward the shore. My memory is beginning to reveal what has happened." Paulsen continues (between the opening and closing quotation marks):

The physical body of man is similar to Mother Earth. Both are created and operated by the actions of vortex, masculine and feminine, the right and left hands of God.

The crown of our head at birth, and for months thereafter, is soft and throbbing with each heartbeat. It is here that we find the long lost door to Divine Spirit and the gateway to the kingdom of heaven, at the magnetic north pole of man.

It is also through this door on the crown of the head that the divine masculine creative force enters into the Tree of Life, our spinal column. It moves downward in a counterclockwise vortex.

The magnetic south pole of man is the lower end of the spine. Here the divine feminine force enters, moving upward in a clockwise vortex.

It is from the movements of these sacred dual forces of life and consciousness that Divine Spirit spun and wove the creation and all the images contained therein into visible form.

The motion of these sacred forces of vortex, and the understanding thereof, provides the key to the hidden door, which opens into the timeless existence of Divine Spirit, Mother-Father God, I Am That I Am.

Mugur Isărescu deţine funcţia de guvernator al Băncii Naţionale a României din anul 1990 fiind singurul funcţionar al statului român care a reuşit să se menţină pe post în mod "miraculos" în ciuda tuturor schimbărilor de regim politic din ultimii 20 de ani şi totodată este cel mai longeviv guvernator de bancă centrală din lume.

Încă din perioada comunistă Mugur Isărescu a lucrat timp de 19 ani ca cercetător ştiinţific la Institutul de Economie Mondială din Bucureşti (o instituţie de acoperire pentru fostul serviciu de informaţii externe din cadrul Securităţii) unde a luat contact cu economia de piaţa, participând la cursuri în Statele Unite. După 1989 a lucrat la Ministerul Afacerilor Externe, apoi ca reprezentant comercial la Ambasada României din Statele Unite ale Americii, iar din septembrie 1990 a ajuns direct Guvernatorul Băncii Naţionale a României.
Între anii 1990-1991, Mugur Isărescu a condus Comisia guvernamentală pentru identificarea şi recuperarea fondurilor deturnate din patrimoniul statului de către Nicolae Ceauşescu şi colaboratorii săi. După rezultatele acestei comisii putem spune că a fost vorba mai curând de o asigurare în continuare a conspirativităţii acestor fonduri decât de o recuperare.

Sub guvernarea lui Mugur Isărescu structurile de conducere ale Băncii Naţionale a României au fost înţesate de masoni, cei mai cunoscuţi dintre cei aflaţi în consiliul de administaţie fiind Virgil Stoenescu şi Bogdan Olteanu. În 2008 chiar Eugen Ovidiu Chirovici, marele maestru al Marii Loji Naţionale Masonice din România a devenit consilier al Guvernatorului BNR.
Comisia Trilaterală este un grup elitist internaţional fondat în 1973 în scopul accelerării instaurării Noii Ordini Mondiale.

Sa presupunem ca-mi dai 1 milion de dolari cu instructiunea: “Investeste-i profitabil si o sa te rasplatesc din plin.” Am tot ce-mi trebuie, asa ca de ce nu? Asa ca ies cu banii in strada si dau banii la intamplare trecatorilor. Ficaruia 10 mii. In schimb, ficare semneaza o hartie pe care scrie “iti datorez 20 de mii de dolari platibili in 5 ani”. Revin la tine si-ti zic: “priveste angajamentele de plata! Ti-am generat un retur pe investitie de 20% pe an!” Tu esti foarte fericit si-mi platesti un comision urias.
Acum am un morman de angajamente de plata (AP) pe care le folosesc pentru a imprumuta si mai multi bani pe care-i imprumut la si mai multi oameni sau le vand altora ca si mine, care fac ca mine. Cumpar si asigurare pentru a contracara incapacitatea de plata a celor imprumutati platind cu aceleasi AP-uri! Asa merge treaba de jur imprejur, fiecare imprumut devenind capitalul cuiva pe baza caruia sa imprumute si mai multi bani. Suntem flamanzi dupa comisioane si bonusuri uriase pentru ca valoarea de fatada a tuturor asset-urilor pe care le-am creat pornind de la acel un milion de dolari a devenit de 50 de ori mai mult.
Si vine ziua in care prima transa de AP-uri intarzie. Dar ghici ce? Persoana care a semnat AP-ul nu poate sa plateasca rata chiar acum! De fapt, o mare parte din imprumutati nu pot. Incerc sa ascund aceasta situatie rusinoasa cat pot de mult dar in scurt timp devii suspicios. Vrei milionul de dolari plus castigul inapoi – cash. Incerc sa vand AP-urile si derivatele pe care le detin dar fiecare este suspicios si nimeni nu este interesat sa cumpere. Firma de asigurari incearca sa-mi acopere pierderile dar poate sa faca asta doar vanzand AP-urile pe care le-a primit de la mine!

Asa ca, intr-un final, Guvernul vine si cumpara AP-urile, face un plan de salvare a firmei de asigurari si a tuturor detinatorilor de AP-uri. Valoarea lor este mult peste un milion de dolari acum. Eu si cu amicul meu ne retragem cu banii castigati. Fiecare din cei multi platesc daunele. Acesta este primul nivel din jocul derulat de catre industria financiara in ultimul deceniu. Este un transfer masiv al bunastarii catre elita financiara alimentata de catre platitorii de taxe si impozite, corporatii multinationale si guverne si in ultima faza de catre munctorii din tari straine care au preluat datoriile USA indirect prin salarii mult mai mici. Oricum, sa vedem criza actuala ca rezultatul unei mari smecherii inseamna sa ratam adevarata stare de lucruri.

Cred ca toti simtim ca ne apropiem de sfarsitul unei ere. La un nivel superficial, este sfarsitul manipularii finantelor-cazino necontrolate. Dar efortul elitelor politice si economice de a repara criza la acest nivel doar dezvaluie adevaratele adancuri. De fapt, criza merge direct pana la fund. Criza a aparut direct din natura banilor si a proprietatii in ziua de azi si va persista si se va intensifica pana cand banii se vor fi transformat complet. Este un proces care tine de decenii si care se afla pe ultima suta de metri. Criza si colapsul sunt construite direct in fundatia ideii de bani asa cum il cunoastem in ziua de azi. Asta este pentru ca banii cauta dobanda, poarta dobanda si, intr-adevar, s-au nascut din dobanda. Ca sa vedem cum functioneaza aceste lucruri, sa se intoarcem la ca cateva concepte de baza in finante. Banii se creaza in momentul in care cineva solicita un imprumut de la o banca (sau mai recent, un imprumut deghizat de la alte feluri de institutii). O datorie este o promisiune ca se va plati in viitor ceva ce se cumpara azi; cu alte cuvinte, a imprumuta bani reprezinta o amanare a comertului. Primesc ceva acum (cumparat cu banii imprumutati) si ma angajez sa ofer ceva in viitor (un bun sau un serviciu ce-l voi vinde in schimbul banilor cu care voi achita imprumutul). O banca sau oricare alt creditor iti va acorda creditul doar daca exista o siguranta ca vei produce bunuri sau produse de valoarea banilor imprumutati. Aceasta “siguranta” este inclusa in contract sub forma de grantie si asta implica rating-ul creditului.

De fiecare data cand folosesti bani, tu, esential vorbind, zici: “am facut cutare lucru sau serviciu care are valoarea echivalenta a ceea ce vreau sa cumpar”. Daca acei bani sunt bani imprumutati, tu zici de fapt ca vei crea acel bun sau serviciu in viitor. Acum intra in scena dobanda. Ce motiveaza o banca sa imprumute bani cuiva de la bun inceput? Este dobanda. Dobanda alimenteaza mecanismul crearii banilor azi. De ficare data cand banii sunt creati din dobanda, necesitatea de a crea bani in viitor se intampla in mod automat. Cantitatea de bani trebuie sa creasca in timp, ceea ce inseamna ca volumul de bunuri si servicii trebuie sa creasc in timp in acelasi fel.

Daca volumul banilor creste mai repede decat volumul de produse si servicii avem inflatie. Daca cresterea este temperata, de exemplu din cauza incetinirii creditarii, avem falimente, recesiune si deflatie. Guvernele pot suplimenta sau reduce stocul de lichiditati in mai multe feluri. Prima, poate crea bani imprumutand de la Banca Centrala, sau in SUA de la Federal Reserve. Acesti bani se materializeaza in depozite bancare care confera bancilor o margine mai generoasa care le permit sa relanseze creditarea.

Vedeti, capacitatea unei banci de a crea bani este limitata de niste reguli. In mod normal, o banca trebuie sa detina lichiditati (sau depozite in banca centrala) egale cu aproximativ 10% din totalul depozitelor clientilor. Restul de 90% pot fi imprumutati, implicit pot crea bani noi. Acesti bani se intorc ca depozite in banci permitand o alta sarja de 81% din ei (90% din 90%) catre imprumuturi noi. In acest fel, ficare 1 dolar din depozitul initial sfarseste ca 9 dolari noi, creati din nimic. Guvernul cheltuind bani imprumutati de la banca centrala provoaca crearea banilor noi (bineinteles ca asta depinde de disponibilitatea bancilor de a oferi credit. In cazul inghetarii creditarii, bancile aduna rezervele in exces iar injectarea de bani de la guvern are putin efect). O alta cale de a mari cantitatea banilor este sa se reduca limita inferioara a lichiditatii necesare. In practica asta se intampla destul de rar, sau cel putin nu direct. Oricum, in ultimul deceniu tot felul de organizatii non-bancare care ofereau credite au taiat din aceasta limita cu ajutorul unui sistem de instrumente financiare greu de deslusit, le-am auzit tot timpul la stiri dar pe care nimeni nu le-a inteles. Rezultatul este ca 1 dolar nu a fost exploatat de 9 ori peste valoarea originala ci chiar de pana la 70 de ori sau chiar mai mult. Asta a permis un retur pe investitie mult peste 5% oferita de activitatea bancara traditionala, impreuna cu pachete de “compensatii” mult peste cele mai salbatice vise ale avarilor. Fiecare dolar creat vine din start cu 1 dolar datorie din cauza dobanzii. Datoria este achitata, daca se intampla, fie cu bunuri si servicii, fie cu alti bani imprumutati care la randul lor pot fi achitati cu si mai multi bani imprumutati... dar intr-un final acesti bani sunt folositi pentru a cumpara bunuri si servicii. Banii de dobanda trebuie sa vina de undeva. Imprumutand mai multi bani pentru a plati dobanzi pentru un imprumut existent doar amana ziua in care necesitatea de a crea bunuri sau servicii este singura solutie.

Tot sistemul alimentat cu bani-dobanda functioneaza bine cat timp volumul bunurilor si serviciilor transformate in bani continua sa creasca. Criza pe care o avem azi exista, pe de o parte din cauza banilor care au fost creati prea rapid fata de bunuri si servicii si mai ales, mult mai repede decat sustenabilitatea intregului sistem. Exista 2 cai de a iesi din aceasta situatie: inflatie si mai mare sau colaps. Fiecare din aceste 2 solutii preasupune distrugerea banilor. Convulsiile actuale ale elitelor politice si financiare incearca in mod pueril sa contracareze ambele posibilitati. Principala problema pe care o au este sa impiedice evaporarea banilor datorita falimentelor rasunatoare in sistemul bancar, pentru ca, nu-i asa, sunt banii lor la mijloc.

Dar avem o criza mult mai profunda care se petrece acum, o criza in crearea de bunuri si servicii care sunt fundatia banilor cu care putem incepe orice. Aceasta criza a dat nastere colapsului imobiliar din SUA care dupa multi, este principalul vinovat. Ca sa intelegem aceste lucruri, sa lamurim sensul termenilor “bun” sau “serviciu”. In termeni economici, aceste cuvinte se refera la ceva ce se schimba cu bani. Daca stau dadaca pentru cineva pe gratis, economistii nu considera asta un serviciu. Nu poate fi folosit pentru a plati o datorie financiara. Nu ma pot duce la supermarket zicand: “am avut grija de copii vecinului azi dimineata, asa ca va rog sa-mi dati hrana”. Dar daca deschid o gradinita particulara si taxez parintii, am creat un “serviciu”. Produsul intern brut (PIB) creste, si, conform economistilor, bunastarea tarii creste.

Acelasi lucru este valabil si in cazul in care tai o padure si vand cheresteaua. Cat timp padurea e acolo, inaccesibila, nu este un “bun” profitabil. Devine un “bun” cand construiesc un drum forestier, angajez muncitori, tai padurea si o transport la client. Practic convertesc padurea in cherestea si PIB-ul creste. In mod similar, daca creez o melodie pe care o distribui gratuit, PIB-ul nu creste iar societatea nu este considerata mai bogata, in schimb daca o ascund dupa copyright si o vand, devine un “bun”. Sau pot cauta si sa gasi o societate care foloseste plante medicinale si alte metode pentru a se vindeca, sa le distrug cultura si sa-i fac dependenti de medicina farmaceutica pe care trebuie sa o cumpere, sa-i expropriez sa nu poata practica agricultura, fiind nevoiti sa cumpere hrana, sa curat tinutul si sa-i angajez pe toti pe o plantatie de banane si bang, am facut lumea mai bogata! Am adus diverse functii, relatii si resurse naturale in imparatia Banului.

Esential vorbind, pentru a avea crestere economica si pentru a sustine banii (bazati pe datorie) trebuie sa capitalizam cat mai mult natura si relatiile unter-umane. De exemplu, acum 30 de ani marea parte din hrana era preparata in casa; azi aproximativ 2 treimi din hrana este preparata in afara caminului, in restaurante sau fabrici care alimenteaza supermarketuri. O functionalitate candva gratis, gatitul a devenit un “serviciu”. Si suntem mai bogati si datorita acestui lucru. Corect? Un alt mecanism care contribuie la cresterea economica de 30 de ani, cresterea si ingrijirea copiilor, nea facut mai bogati. Acum suntem eliberati de grija copiilor nostri. Platim experti care fac treaba mult mai eficient.

In vremuri apuse, entertainment-ul era de asemenea gratis, bazat pe participare. Ficare putea canta la un instrument, face vocal, juca intr-o piese de teatru. Acum 75 de ani in SUA, fiecare oras de provincie avea fanfara proprie si o echipa de baseball. Azi platim pentru aceste servicii. Economia a crescut. Hooray!

Criza cu care ne confruntam azi a iesit din faptul ca aproape nu mai exista capital social, cultural, natural sau spiritual care poate fi convertit in bani. Secole, milenii de creare de bani aproape in continuu ne-a adus la faza in care nu mai exista aproape nimic de vanzare. Padurile noastre sunt distruse dincolo de capacitatea de a le repara, solul este sleit si spalat de ape, s-a pescuit peste masura, capacitatea pamantului de a reintegra gunoaiele produse este saturata. Comoara umanitatii formata din cantece, povesti, imagini si simboluri au fost cumparate si puse sub semnul copyrightului. Orice fraza sau vorba desteapta a fost transformata in slogan protejat de trademark. Abilitatile si realtiile interumane ne-au fost luate si apoi re-vandute si am ajuns in faza in care depindem de straini, implicit de bani, pentru lucruri pe care omul nu a fost niciodata nevoit sa plateasca cu bani pana de curand: hrana, adapost, imbracaminte, ingrijirea copiilor, gatit. Viata in sine a devenit un bun de consum. Azi ne vindem si ultimele vestigii ale existentei noastre: sanatatea noastra, biosfera, chiar si creierele. Acesta este procesul care incheie aceasta perioada. Este aproape gata, mai ales in america si in civilizatia occidentala. In tarile in curs de dezvoltare inca mai exista oameni care traiesc in culturi bazate pe ideea de a darui, unde bunastarea naturala si sociala nu este inca subiect al ideei de proprietate. Globalizarea este procesul de a smulge aceste resurse pentru a alimenta masina de bani, flamanda de crestere economica. Si cu toate astea, decopertarea acestor resurse se apropie de limita deoarece nu mai este nimic de luat, odata, apoi pentru ca buzunarele ticsite incep sa nu mai suporte presiunea. Rezultatul este ca cantitatea de bani in circulatie, implicit cantiatea de datorii, de cateva decenii incoace a depasit de cateva ori capacitatea de a produce bunuri si servicii. Este in stransa legatura cu problema clasica de supra-oferta in economiile capitaliste. Criza Marxiana a capitalului se reflecta in viitor pe cat de adanc pe atat de constant, industriile cu profit foarte mare si piete pot fi create pentru a compensa cercul vicios al caderii preturilor, scaderii salariilor, consumerism deprimant si supra-productie in industriile mature. Continuitatea capitalismului, asa cum il cunoastem depinde de capacitati infinite de industrii pentru a transforma cantitati infinite de resurse sociale, naturale, culturale si spirituale in bani. Problema este ca aceste resurse sunt finite si cu cat se apropie mai mult de consumarea completa, cu atat exploatarea lor devine mai dureroasa. Asadar, concomitent cu criza financiara aven o criza ecologica si o criza a sanatatii. Fiecare dintre acestea este intr-o legatura intima una cu cealalta. Nu mai putem sa transformam mai mult sanatatea noastra in bani fara a ameninta baza vietii. Confruntata cu consumul limitat al resurselor naturale, capitalul financiar a incercat sa amane inveitabilul practic auto-devorandu-se. Lovitura dot-com din anii 90 a arata ca aceasta crestere a productiei nu a tinut pasul cu inmultirea banilor. Foarte multi bani in exces circulau liber in mod isteric cautand un loc de unde sa poata sa-si extraga bunurile sau serviciile. Deci, pentru a amana colapsul inevitabil, Federal Reserve a taiat dobanzile si a relaxat conditiile de politici monetare pentru a permite ca vechile datorii sa fie rascumparate cu credite noi (in loc de bunuri si servicii). Noile bunuri si servicii financiare erau niste idiotenii, artifacte ale contabilitatii eronate la scara mare care cuprindea intreg sistemul.

Tot felul de profitori au observat ca schema Bernard Madoff Ponzi nu era foarte diferita de sistemul piramidal bazat pe solutii de imprumuturi si alte intrumente, care in sinea lor au creat aceasta bula ca sitemul Madoff, care nu putea exista si functiona decat cu injectarea exponentiala a banilor noi. Asa a devenit un simbol a timpurilor moderne, chiar mai mult decat banuiesc oamenii. Nu este doar sistemul piramidal practicat de catre cazino-economistii de pe Wall Street. Sistemul economic la scara mare bazat pe transformarea continua a resurselor naturale in bani este cat se poate de ne-sustenabila. Este ca un foc de tabara care trebuie sa arda cat mai inalt in ciuda faptului ca conbustibilul este pe terminate. Exact cum focul desface legaturile atomice in materiale in timpul procesului de ardere eliberand lumina si caldura, la fel si economia consuma resursele naturale eliberand energie libera, numita bani. Numai un nebun poate crede ca un foc poate arde si mai sus, cand cantitatea de combustibil este limitata. Pentru a desfasura metafora mai mult, se practica dezindustrializarea si capitalizarea sa pentru a crea mai multa caldura pentru a crea mai mult combustibil. Conform celei de-a 2-a reguli a legii termodinamicii, cantitatea creata intotdeuna va fi mai mica decat cantitatea consumata pentru a crea acel lucru. In mod evident, imprumutarea de bani noi pentru a achita rata si dobanda nu poate dura prea mult, dar asta este ce a facut “economia” in ultimii 10 ani.

Si totusi, daca abandonam aceasta cale tot trebuie sa ne confruntam cu problema epuizarii resurselor. Majoritatea propunerilor pentru rezolvarea crizei actuale implica gasirea de si mai multe resurse naturale. Fie forarea de mai multe puturi petroliere, pavarea spatiilor verzi sau reglementarea puterii de cumparare, tinta este relansarea cresterii economice adica sa se mareasca baza de bunuri si servicii. Adica sa se gaseasca lucruri noi pe care noi sa le putem plati. Azi, de neconceput pentru inaintasii nostri, am ajuns sa platim apa si muzica. Ce a mai ramas de convertit in bani? Un colaps este pe drum, nu poate fi evitat; intr-adevar suntem in umbra sa. Raspunsul guvernelor, sustinerea temporara a industriilor, a fost o tentativa de a propti turnul de bani care este peste cantitatea de bunuri si servicii promise. Usor de anticipat, aceasta injectie de capital in aceste industrii este un esec mizerabil. Urmatorul demers, masivele pachete de stimulare recomandate de catre administratia Obama vor esua la fel de lamentabil dar la un nivel mult mai esential. Va esua pentru ca nu mai incape: natura este incapabila sa mai primeasca cantitatile de gunoi si reziduri fara a ameninta si chiar distruge baza ecologica a civilizatiei noastre, oamenii sunt incapabili sa suporte o dezbinare sociala si mai accentuata, organismele vor fi slabite si incapabile de a supravietui intr-un mediu toxic. Faptul ca am reusit sa suprasaturam piata de credit relfecta clar faptul nu mai avem mare lucru ce poate fi converit in bani. […] Acest suport guvernamental va reusi, in cel mai bun caz sa amane inveitabilul cativa ani timp in care masinaria economica va secatui complet si ultimele resurse ale naturii, spiritului, corpului si culturii. Cand aceste vestigii ale bunastarii comune vor fi disparut, nimic nu va sta in calea unei inflatii rapide iar valutele se vor prabusi la nivel mondial.

Criza actuala este de fapt ultima faza a procesului care a inceput in anii 1930. Solutiile succesive pentru problema fundamentala a cresterii volumului de bani cu valoarea dobanzilor a ajuns rapid la saturatie. Prima solutie efectiva a fost razboiul, solutie care a devenit permanenta incepand cu anul 1940 si pana azi. Din nefericire, sau mai bine din fericire, armele nucleare si o anume stare de constiinta publica au limitat escaladarea fara limita a masurilor militare. Alte solutii, cum ar fi globalizarea sau dezvoltarea bazata pe tehnologie au permis crearea de noi bunuri si servicii inexistente pana acum. Dar si acestea, odata epuizate vor readuce lumea la faza de exploatarea a resurselor care vor fi reusit sa se autorecupereze. In schimb daca nu gasim resurse ce pot fi exploatate repede riscam sa plonjam in nivele nebanuite de saracie, mizerie si alienare care nu pot fi amanate mult timp.

In fata crizei care loveste, oamenii se intreaba ce pot face sa se apere? “Sa cumpara aur? Sa adun hrana la conserva? Sa construiesc un adapost solid intr-o zona retrasa? Ce ar trebui sa fac?” As dori sa sugerez un alt tip de intrebare: “Care este cel mai frumos lucru pe care-l poti face?” Vedeti, cresterea crizei prezinta o oportunitate fantastica. Deflatia, distrugerea banilor este doar un rau categoric daca crearea banilor este un bun categoric. Oricum, puteti vedea din exemplele pe care vi le-am dat ca aceasta creare a banilor ne-a facut pe toti mai saraci. In mod interesant, distrugerea banilor are potentialul de a ne imbogati pe noi toti. Ne ofera oportunitatea de a ne recastiga resursele universale din ghearele banilor si a proprietatii.

Vedem de fapt aceste lucruri cum se intampla de fiecare data cand se contureaza o recesiune economica. Oamenii nu mai sunt capabili sa plateasca pentru diverse bunuri si servicii si trebuie sa se bazeze pe familie prieteni si vecini. Cand nu mai exista bani pentru a facilita tranzactiile, economiile bazate be schimb reciproc se formeaza, un altfel de tip de bani apar. Oricum in mod absurd, oamenii si institutiile tin disperati cu dintii si unghiile de starea actuala nu care cumva sa se intample asta. In mod instinctiv, prima reactie la o criza economica este ca toata lumea sa faca si sa tina cati mai multi bani accelerand procesul de a ransforma tot ce au in bani. La nivel sistemic, cererea de credite genereaza o presiune fantastica care duce la masuri ciudate. Putem vedea cum se foreaza dupa petrol in Alaska, in oceane si asa mai departe. Timpul a sosit ca procesul sa se inverseze, lucrurile sa inceapa sa migreze din zona bunurilor si serviciilor inapoi catre zona bunurilor comune, reciprocitatii, auto-suficientei si al partajarii in interiorul comunitatii. Trebuie sa fim constienti: asta se va intampla oricum, imediat dupa prabusirea banilor, oamenii isi vor pierde locurile de munca sau vor deveni prea saraci pentru a cumpara lucruri cu bani. Oamenii vor incepe sa se ajute reciproc si comunitatile reale vor incepe sa reapara.

Intr-e timp, tot ce facem pentru a proteja resursele naturale si sociale de la a fi acaparate de transformarea lor in bani vor grabi si vor atenua severitatea colapsului. Fiecare padure salvata de la taiere, fiecare constructie oprita, fiecare grup cooperativ infiintat, fiecare invatat sa se vindece sau sa-si construiasca propria casa, sa-si pregateasca hrana, sa repare, sa creeze bunuri fara a se amesteca in ciclul proprietatii si banilor va scurta durata de viata a Masinii. Gandeste-te la asta in felul urmator: daca in acest moment nu depinzi de bani pentru o parte din necesitati sau placeri, colapsul sistemului monetar nu va fi asa de dur resimtit asupra ta. Acelasi lucru se aplica si la nivel social. Orice organizatie sau retea sociala, comunitati sau institutii sociale care nu este un vehicul al transformarii vietii in bani vor sustine si vor imbogati viata de dupa bani.

In alte parti am descris sisteme monetare alternative bazate pe credit mutual care nu duc la conversia a tot ceea ce este bun, adevarat si frumos in bani. Aceasta atitudine declanseaza o atitudine umana fundamentala, aceea de o constiinta de sine diferita de ceea ce se intampla azi. Nu va mai fi adevarat conceptul de “mai mult pentru mine inseamna mai putin pentru tine”. La nivel personal, cea mai profunda revolutie pe care o putem declansa este trezirea unei constiinte de sine, in identitatea noastra. Eul separat, sugerat de Descartes sau Adam Smith se apropie de capat devenind o idee uzata. Vom intelege, intr-un sfarsit natura interconectata a lucrurilor, cu noi fiind parti active din tot ceea ce numim viata. Interesul personal este o facatura care da iluzia acestei uniuni pentru ca cauta cresterea individuala cu pretul a ceva exterior, altceva. Probabil multi din cei care citesc acest eseu sunt de acord cu principiul interconectarii, fie dintr-un punct de vedere Buddhist sau ecologic. A venit timpul sa facem asta. Este timpul sa intram in spiritul daruirii care implica sentimentul de non-separare. Devine din ce in ce mai evident faptul ca “mai putin pentru tine” (in toate dimensiunile acestui concept) inseamna “mai putin si pentru mine”. Ideologia cresterii perpetue ne-a adus intr-o faza a saraciei asa de apasatoare ca tanjim dupa o gura de aer curat. Aceasta ideologie si civilizatia construita pe ea este cea care se prabuseste acum.

Tot ce facem individual si colectiv pentru a amana sau rezista colapsul va face treaba mult mai dificila. Trebuie sa incetam sa rezistam revolutiei fiintei umane. Daca dorim sa supravietuim multiplelor crize care se desfasoara acum, nu trebuie sa cautam sa supravietuim cu orice pret. Aceasta este esenta separarii de tot; ne agatam de un trecut muribund. In schimb, sa ne orientam atentia catre reuniune si gandire in spiritul de “ce putem darui”. Cum putem contribui fiecare dintre noi la o lumea mai buna? Aceasta este responsabilitatea fiecaria dintre noi si singura certitudine existenta. Mai concret, trebuie sa ne implicam in distrugerea banilor in mod constient in loc sa facem asta inconstient prin colapsul economic. Daca ai bani pentru investitii, investeste-i in activitati care in mod explicit cauta sa construiasca comunitati, sa protejeze natura si sa apere bunurile comune. Asteapta-ta la zero castig sau pierderi in procesul de retur pe investitie, acesta este un semn bun ca nu convertesti in mod inconstient lumea si viata in si mai multi bani. Chiar daca ai sau nu ai bani pentru investitii poti recupera ce a fost vandut facand cativa pasi in afara economiei cu bani. Tot ce inveti sa faci pentru tine sau pentru alti oameni fara sa platesti cu bani pentru asta, orice folosire a materialelor aruncate la gunoi, orice faci sau construiesti in loc sa cumperi, sa oferi in loc sa vinzi, fiecare aptitudine sau talent ce-l inveti sau inveti pe altii va reduce imparatia banilor si va ajuta tranzitia. O lumea a daruirii, un ecoul al societatilor primitive bazate pe ideea de a oferi, o retea eco-logica si invataturile spirituale apuse se afla chiar deasupra noastra. Ne atinge strunele inimii si ne trezesc starea de generozitate. Vom raspunde la timp inainte de consumarea ultimelor firmituri ale frumusetii pe acest pamant?

Evenimentele din film ne apar ca pură fantezie, fiindu-ne greu să credem că ar fi putut avea loc vreodată. Şi totuşi sursele istorice confirmă împrieteniri şi întrajutorări între taberele combatante în timpul primului război mondial. Mai mult decât atât, ele semnalează apariţia de asemenea conjucturi excepţionale nu doar într-un singur loc, ci în mai multe puncte de pe linia frontului. Filmul pune accent pe starea de fraternitate ce a însoţit aceste evenimente din primul război mondial, pe frumuseţea descoperirii adevărului, a realităţii atât de normale, de familiare, realitate ce a fost ascunsă, deformată prin minciună şi manipulare.
Apropierea dintre soldaţi e plină de stângăcii, amintindu-ne de copiii ce cu bunăvoinţă şi candoare îşi fac noi prieteni. Frica şi ura ce stapâneau întreaga zonă sunt gradat alungate, umorul şi buna dispoziţie îşi fac încet apariţia, un puternic spirit de camaradenie uneşte taberele combatante. O uluitoare întrajutorare intervine firesc:
„...artileria noastră vă va bombarda peste zece minute. Şi vă propun să veniţi să vă puneţi la adăpost în tranşeele noastre.”
Această cunoaştere directă dintre tabere disipă valul minciunii şi produce o deschidere puternică a soldaţilor, o înţelegere profundă a manipulării la care au fost supuşi şi deci a ridicolului luptei:
„Toate astea nu mai au nici un sens. Să mori mâine e şi mai absurd decât să fi murit ieri.”
Aceste evenimente constituie cu siguranţă avanpremiera unei viitoare fraternităţi planetare.
Cei ce întreţin şi dezvoltă extraordinara fraternizare sunt locotenenţii taberelor combatante. Oameni obişnuiţi, fără însuşiri fizice şi intelectuale deosebite dar plini de bun simţ, de omenie şi curaj, ei întreprind aceste demersuri de comunicare între tabere.
Deşi regizorul Christian Carion vrea să deturneze imensa încărcătură sublimă a evenimentelor prezentate, direcţionând-o abil, manipulator, în slujba propagandei Uniunii Europene, valorile profund umane ale acestei fraternizări istorice sunt foarte puternice, acoperind şi anulând în mare măsură mesajul propagandistic al filmului. Cu aceste valori divine, autentice: unitate, toleranţă, bunăvoinţă, omenie, altruism, solidaritate, fraternitate, Uniunea Europeana nu a avut, nu are şi nu va avea niciodată vreo legătură.
Ratându-şi obiectivul propagandistic, „Joyeux Noël” devine un film simplu, direct, virulent, optimist, ce ne aduce o atât de necesară rază de speranţă. El pune subtil sub semnul întrebării "normalitatea" actualei societăţi concurenţiale. Filmul este un apel la înţelegere, la omenie, la altruism, la o convieţuire simplă, fără competiţii absurde, fără resentimente, fără ură. Este un apel la fraternizare, la rezistenţă împotriva absurdităţilor, la nonviolenţă, la ieşirea din ignoranţă.

PRIVATE CARS WERE RELATIVELY SCARCE in 1919 and horse-drawn conveyances were still common. In residential districts, electric streetlights had not yet replaced many of the old gaslights. And within the home, electricity remained largely a luxury item for the wealthy.

Just ten years later things looked very different. Cars dominated the streets and most urban homes had electric lights, electric flat irons, and vacuum cleaners. In upper-middle-class houses, washing machines, refrigerators, toasters, curling irons, percolators, heating pads, and popcorn poppers were becoming commonplace. And although the first commercial radio station didn’t begin broadcasting until 1920, the American public, with an adult population of about 122 million people, bought 4,438,000 radios in the year 1929 alone.

But despite the apparent tidal wave of new consumer goods and what appeared to be a healthy appetite for their consumption among the well-to-do, industrialists were worried. They feared that the frugal habits maintained by most American families would be difficult to break. Perhaps even more threatening was the fact that the industrial capacity for turning out goods seemed to be increasing at a pace greater than people’s sense that they needed them.

It was this latter concern that led Charles Kettering, director of General Motors Research, to write a 1929 magazine article called “Keep the Consumer Dissatisfied.” He wasn’t suggesting that manufacturers produce shoddy products. Along with many of his corporate cohorts, he was defining a strategic shift for American industry—from fulfilling basic human needs to creating new ones.

In a 1927 interview with the magazine Nation’s Business, Secretary of Labor James J. Davis provided some numbers to illustrate a problem that the New York Times called “need saturation.” Davis noted that “the textile mills of this country can produce all the cloth needed in six months’ operation each year” and that 14 percent of the American shoe factories could produce a year’s supply of footwear. The magazine went on to suggest, “It may be that the world’s needs ultimately will be produced by three days’ work a week.”

Business leaders were less than enthusiastic about the prospect of a society no longer centered on the production of goods. For them, the new “labor-saving” machinery presented not a vision of liberation but a threat to their position at the center of power. John E. Edgerton, president of the National Association of Manufacturers, typified their response when he declared: “I am for everything that will make work happier but against everything that will further subordinate its importance. The emphasis should be put on work—more work and better work.” “Nothing,” he claimed, “breeds radicalism more than unhappiness unless it is leisure.”

By the late 1920s, America’s business and political elite had found a way to defuse the dual threat of stagnating economic growth and a radicalized working class in what one industrial consultant called “the gospel of consumption”—the notion that people could be convinced that however much they have, it isn’t enough. President Herbert Hoover’s 1929 Committee on Recent Economic Changes observed in glowing terms the results: “By advertising and other promotional devices . . . a measurable pull on production has been created which releases capital otherwise tied up.” They celebrated the conceptual breakthrough: “Economically we have a boundless field before us; that there are new wants which will make way endlessly for newer wants, as fast as they are satisfied.”

Today “work and more work” is the accepted way of doing things. If anything, improvements to the labor-saving machinery since the 1920s have intensified the trend. Machines can save labor, but only if they go idle when we possess enough of what they can produce. In other words, the machinery offers us an opportunity to work less, an opportunity that as a society we have chosen not to take. Instead, we have allowed the owners of those machines to define their purpose: not reduction of labor, but “higher productivity”—and with it the imperative to consume virtually everything that the machinery can possibly produce.

FROM THE EARLIEST DAYS of the Age of Consumerism there were critics. One of the most influential was Arthur Dahlberg, whose 1932 book Jobs, Machines, and Capitalism was well known to policymakers and elected officials in Washington. Dahlberg declared that “failure to shorten the length of the working day . . . is the primary cause of our rationing of opportunity, our excess industrial plant, our enormous wastes of competition, our high pressure advertising, [and] our economic imperialism.” Since much of what industry produced was no longer aimed at satisfying human physical needs, a four-hour workday, he claimed, was necessary to prevent society from becoming disastrously materialistic. “By not shortening the working day when all the wood is in,” he suggested, the profit motive becomes “both the creator and satisfier of spiritual needs.” For when the profit motive can turn nowhere else, “it wraps our soap in pretty boxes and tries to convince us that that is solace to our souls.”

There was, for a time, a visionary alternative. In 1930 Kellogg Company, the world’s leading producer of ready-to-eat cereal, announced that all of its nearly fifteen hundred workers would move from an eight-hour to a six-hour workday. Company president Lewis Brown and owner W. K. Kellogg noted that if the company ran “four six-hour shifts . . . instead of three eight-hour shifts, this will give work and paychecks to the heads of three hundred more families in Battle Creek.”

This was welcome news to workers at a time when the country was rapidly descending into the Great Depression. But as Benjamin Hunnicutt explains in his book Kellogg’s Six-Hour Day, Brown and Kellogg wanted to do more than save jobs. They hoped to show that the “free exchange of goods, services, and labor in the free market would not have to mean mindless consumerism or eternal exploitation of people and natural resources.” Instead “workers would be liberated by increasingly higher wages and shorter hours for the final freedom promised by the Declaration of Independence—the pursuit of happiness.”

To be sure, Kellogg did not intend to stop making a profit. But the company leaders argued that men and women would work more efficiently on shorter shifts, and with more people employed, the overall purchasing power of the community would increase, thus allowing for more purchases of goods, including cereals.

A shorter workday did entail a cut in overall pay for workers. But Kellogg raised the hourly rate to partially offset the loss and provided for production bonuses to encourage people to work hard. The company eliminated time off for lunch, assuming that workers would rather work their shorter shift and leave as soon as possible. In a “personal letter” to employees, Brown pointed to the “mental income” of “the enjoyment of the surroundings of your home, the place you work, your neighbors, the other pleasures you have [that are] harder to translate into dollars and cents.” Greater leisure, he hoped, would lead to “higher standards in school and civic . . . life” that would benefit the company by allowing it to “draw its workers from a community where good homes predominate.”

It was an attractive vision, and it worked. Not only did Kellogg prosper, but journalists from magazines such as Forbes and BusinessWeek reported that the great majority of company employees embraced the shorter workday. One reporter described “a lot of gardening and community beautification, athletics and hobbies . . . libraries well patronized and the mental background of these fortunate workers . . . becoming richer.”

A U.S. Department of Labor survey taken at the time, as well as interviews Hunnicutt conducted with former workers, confirm this picture. The government interviewers noted that “little dissatisfaction with lower earnings resulting from the decrease in hours was expressed, although in the majority of cases very real decreases had resulted.” One man spoke of “more time at home with the family.” Another remembered: “I could go home and have time to work in my garden.” A woman noted that the six-hour shift allowed her husband to “be with 4 boys at ages it was important.”

Those extra hours away from work also enabled some people to accomplish things that they might never have been able to do otherwise. Hunnicutt describes how at the end of her interview an eighty-year-old woman began talking about ping-pong. “We’d get together. We had a ping-pong table and all my relatives would come for dinner and things and we’d all play ping-pong by the hour.” Eventually she went on to win the state championship.

Many women used the extra time for housework. But even then, they often chose work that drew in the entire family, such as canning. One recalled how canning food at home became “a family project” that “we all enjoyed,” including her sons, who “opened up to talk freely.” As Hunnicutt puts it, canning became the “medium for something more important than preserving food. Stories, jokes, teasing, quarreling, practical instruction, songs, griefs, and problems were shared. The modern discipline of alienated work was left behind for an older . . . more convivial kind of working together.”

This was the stuff of a human ecology in which thousands of small, almost invisible, interactions between family members, friends, and neighbors create an intricate structure that supports social life in much the same way as topsoil supports our biological existence. When we allow either one to become impoverished, whether out of greed or intemperance, we put our long-term survival at risk.

Our modern predicament is a case in point. By 2005 per capita household spending (in inflation-adjusted dollars) was twelve times what it had been in 1929, while per capita spending for durable goods—the big stuff such as cars and appliances—was thirty-two times higher. Meanwhile, by 2000 the average married couple with children was working almost five hundred hours a year more than in 1979. And according to reports by the Federal Reserve Bank in 2004 and 2005, over 40 percent of American families spend more than they earn. The average household carries $18,654 in debt, not including home-mortgage debt, and the ratio of household debt to income is at record levels, having roughly doubled over the last two decades. We are quite literally working ourselves into a frenzy just so we can consume all that our machines can produce.

Yet we could work and spend a lot less and still live quite comfortably. By 1991 the amount of goods and services produced for each hour of labor was double what it had been in 1948. By 2006 that figure had risen another 30 percent. In other words, if as a society we made a collective decision to get by on the amount we produced and consumed seventeen years ago, we could cut back from the standard forty-hour week to 5.3 hours per day—or 2.7 hours if we were willing to return to the 1948 level. We were already the richest country on the planet in 1948 and most of the world has not yet caught up to where we were then.

Rather than realizing the enriched social life that Kellogg’s vision offered us, we have impoverished our human communities with a form of materialism that leaves us in relative isolation from family, friends, and neighbors. We simply don’t have time for them. Unlike our great-grandparents who passed the time, we spend it. An outside observer might conclude that we are in the grip of some strange curse, like a modern-day King Midas whose touch turns everything into a product built around a microchip.

Of course not everybody has been able to take part in the buying spree on equal terms. Millions of Americans work long hours at poverty wages while many others can find no work at all. However, as advertisers well know, poverty does not render one immune to the gospel of consumption.

Meanwhile, the influence of the gospel has spread far beyond the land of its origin. Most of the clothes, video players, furniture, toys, and other goods Americans buy today are made in distant countries, often by underpaid people working in sweatshop conditions. The raw material for many of those products comes from clearcutting or strip mining or other disastrous means of extraction. Here at home, business activity is centered on designing those products, financing their manufacture, marketing them—and counting the profits.

KELLOGG’S VISION, DESPITE ITS POPULARITY with his employees, had little support among his fellow business leaders. But Dahlberg’s book had a major influence on Senator (and future Supreme Court justice) Hugo Black who, in 1933, introduced legislation requiring a thirty-hour workweek. Although Roosevelt at first appeared to support Black’s bill, he soon sided with the majority of businessmen who opposed it. Instead, Roosevelt went on to launch a series of policy initiatives that led to the forty-hour standard that we more or less observe today.

By the time the Black bill came before Congress, the prophets of the gospel of consumption had been developing their tactics and techniques for at least a decade. However, as the Great Depression deepened, the public mood was uncertain, at best, about the proper role of the large corporation. Labor unions were gaining in both public support and legal legitimacy, and the Roosevelt administration, under its New Deal program, was implementing government regulation of industry on an unprecedented scale. Many corporate leaders saw the New Deal as a serious threat. James A. Emery, general counsel for the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), issued a “call to arms” against the “shackles of irrational regulation” and the “back-breaking burdens of taxation,” characterizing the New Deal doctrines as “alien invaders of our national thought.”

In response, the industrial elite represented by NAM, including General Motors, the big steel companies, General Foods, DuPont, and others, decided to create their own propaganda. An internal NAM memo called for “re-selling all of the individual Joe Doakes on the advantages and benefits he enjoys under a competitive economy.” NAM launched a massive public relations campaign it called the “American Way.” As the minutes of a NAM meeting described it, the purpose of the campaign was to link “free enterprise in the public consciousness with free speech, free press and free religion as integral parts of democracy.”

Consumption was not only the linchpin of the campaign; it was also recast in political terms. A campaign booklet put out by the J. Walter Thompson advertising agency told readers that under “private capitalism, the Consumer, the Citizen is boss,” and “he doesn’t have to wait for election day to vote or for the Court to convene before handing down his verdict. The consumer ‘votes’ each time he buys one article and rejects another.”

According to Edward Bernays, one of the founders of the field of public relations and a principal architect of the American Way, the choices available in the polling booth are akin to those at the department store; both should consist of a limited set of offerings that are carefully determined by what Bernays called an “invisible government” of public-relations experts and advertisers working on behalf of business leaders. Bernays claimed that in a “democratic society” we are and should be “governed, our minds . . . molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of.”

NAM formed a national network of groups to ensure that the booklet from J. Walter Thompson and similar material appeared in libraries and school curricula across the country. The campaign also placed favorable articles in newspapers (often citing “independent” scholars who were paid secretly) and created popular magazines and film shorts directed to children and adults with such titles as “Building Better Americans,” “The Business of America’s People Is Selling,” and “America Marching On.”

Perhaps the biggest public relations success for the American Way campaign was the 1939 New York World’s Fair. The fair’s director of public relations called it “the greatest public relations program in industrial history,” one that would battle what he called the “New Deal propaganda.” The fair’s motto was “Building the World of Tomorrow,” and it was indeed a forum in which American corporations literally modeled the future they were determined to create. The most famous of the exhibits was General Motors’ 35,000-square-foot Futurama, where visitors toured Democracity, a metropolis of multilane highways that took its citizens from their countryside homes to their jobs in the skyscraper-packed central city.

For all of its intensity and spectacle, the campaign for the American Way did not create immediate, widespread, enthusiastic support for American corporations or the corporate vision of the future. But it did lay the ideological groundwork for changes that came after the Second World War, changes that established what is still commonly called our post-war society.

The war had put people back to work in numbers that the New Deal had never approached, and there was considerable fear that unemployment would return when the war ended. Kellogg workers had been working forty-eight-hour weeks during the war and the majority of them were ready to return to a six-hour day and thirty-hour week. Most of them were able to do so, for a while. But W. K. Kellogg and Lewis Brown had turned the company over to new managers in 1937.

The new managers saw only costs and no benefits to the six-hour day, and almost immediately after the end of the war they began a campaign to undermine shorter hours. Management offered workers a tempting set of financial incentives if they would accept an eight-hour day. Yet in a vote taken in 1946, 77 percent of the men and 87 percent of the women wanted to return to a thirty-hour week rather than a forty-hour one. In making that choice, they also chose a fairly dramatic drop in earnings from artificially high wartime levels.

The company responded with a strategy of attrition, offering special deals on a department-by-department basis where eight hours had pockets of support, typically among highly skilled male workers. In the culture of a post-war, post-Depression U.S., that strategy was largely successful. But not everyone went along. Within Kellogg there was a substantial, albeit slowly dwindling group of people Hunnicutt calls the “mavericks,” who resisted longer work hours. They clustered in a few departments that had managed to preserve the six-hour day until the company eliminated it once and for all in 1985.

The mavericks rejected the claims made by the company, the union, and many of their co-workers that the extra money they could earn on an eight-hour shift was worth it. Despite the enormous difference in societal wealth between the 1930s and the 1980s, the language the mavericks used to explain their preference for a six-hour workday was almost identical to that used by Kellogg workers fifty years earlier. One woman, worried about the long hours worked by her son, said, “He has no time to live, to visit and spend time with his family, and to do the other things he really loves to do.”

Several people commented on the link between longer work hours and consumerism. One man said, “I was getting along real good, so there was no use in me working any more time than I had to.” He added, “Everybody thought they were going to get rich when they got that eight-hour deal and it really didn’t make a big difference. . . . Some went out and bought automobiles right quick and they didn’t gain much on that because the car took the extra money they had.”

The mavericks, well aware that longer work hours meant fewer jobs, called those who wanted eight-hour shifts plus overtime “work hogs.” “Kellogg’s was laying off people,” one woman commented, “while some of the men were working really fantastic amounts of overtime—that’s just not fair.” Another quoted the historian Arnold Toynbee, who said, “We will either share the work, or take care of people who don’t have work.”

PEOPLE IN THE DEPRESSION-WRACKED 1930s, with what seems to us today to be a very low level of material goods, readily chose fewer work hours for the same reasons as some of their children and grandchildren did in the 1980s: to have more time for themselves and their families. We could, as a society, make a similar choice today.

But we cannot do it as individuals. The mavericks at Kellogg held out against company and social pressure for years, but in the end the marketplace didn’t offer them a choice to work less and consume less. The reason is simple: that choice is at odds with the foundations of the marketplace itself—at least as it is currently constructed. The men and women who masterminded the creation of the consumerist society understood that theirs was a political undertaking, and it will take a powerful political movement to change course today.

Bernays’s version of a “democratic society,” in which political decisions are marketed to consumers, has many modern proponents. Consider a comment by Andrew Card, George W. Bush’s former chief of staff. When asked why the administration waited several months before making its case for war against Iraq, Card replied, “You don’t roll out a new product in August.” And in 2004, one of the leading legal theorists in the United States, federal judge Richard Posner, declared that “representative democracy . . . involves a division between rulers and ruled,” with the former being “a governing class,” and the rest of us exercising a form of “consumer sovereignty” in the political sphere with “the power not to buy a particular product, a power to choose though not to create.”

Sometimes an even more blatant antidemocratic stance appears in the working papers of elite think tanks. One such example is the prominent Harvard political scientist Samuel Huntington’s 1975 contribution to a Trilateral Commission report on “The Crisis of Democracy.” Huntington warns against an “excess of democracy,” declaring that “a democratic political system usually requires some measure of apathy and noninvolvement on the part of some individuals and groups.” Huntington notes that “marginal social groups, as in the case of the blacks, are now becoming full participants in the political system” and thus present the “danger of overloading the political system” and undermining its authority.

According to this elite view, the people are too unstable and ignorant for self-rule. “Commoners,” who are viewed as factors of production at work and as consumers at home, must adhere to their proper roles in order to maintain social stability. Posner, for example, disparaged a proposal for a national day of deliberation as “a small but not trivial reduction in the amount of productive work.” Thus he appears to be an ideological descendant of the business leader who warned that relaxing the imperative for “more work and better work” breeds “radicalism.”

As far back as 1835, Boston workingmen striking for shorter hours declared that they needed time away from work to be good citizens: “We have rights, and we have duties to perform as American citizens and members of society.” As those workers well understood, any meaningful democracy requires citizens who are empowered to create and re-create their government, rather than a mass of marginalized voters who merely choose from what is offered by an “invisible” government. Citizenship requires a commitment of time and attention, a commitment people cannot make if they are lost to themselves in an ever-accelerating cycle of work and consumption.

We can break that cycle by turning off our machines when they have created enough of what we need. Doing so will give us an opportunity to re-create the kind of healthy communities that were beginning to emerge with Kellogg’s six-hour day, communities in which human welfare is the overriding concern rather than subservience to machines and those who own them. We can create a society where people have time to play together as well as work together, time to act politically in their common interests, and time even to argue over what those common interests might be. That fertile mix of human relationships is necessary for healthy human societies, which in turn are necessary for sustaining a healthy planet.

If we want to save the Earth, we must also save ourselves from ourselves. We can start by sharing the work and the wealth. We may just find that there is plenty of both to go around.

Introduction

The environmental crisis consists of the deterioration and outright destruction of micro and macro ecosystems worldwide, entailing the elimination of countless numbers of wild creatures from the air, land, and sea, with many species being pushed to the brink of extinction, and into extinction. People who passively allow this to happen, not to mention those who actively promote it for economic or other reasons, are already a good distance down the road to insanity. Most people do not see, understand, or care very much about this catastrophe of the planet because they are overwhelmingly preoccupied with grave psychological problems. The environmental crisis is rooted in the psychological crisis of the modern individual. This makes the search for an eco-psychology crucial; we must understand better what terrible thing is happening to the modern human mind, why it is happening, and what can be done about it.

Deep Thinking

The solution to the global environmental crisis we face today depends far less on the dissemination of new information than it does on the re-emergence into consciousness of old ideas. Primitive ideas or tribal ideas, kinship, solidarity, community, direct democracy, diversity, harmony with nature provide the framework or foundation of any rational or sane society. Today, these primal ideas, gifts of our ancestral heritage, are blocked from entering consciousness. The vast majority of modern people cannot see the basic truths that our ancient ancestors knew and that we must know again, about living within the balance of nature. We are lost in endless political debates, scientific research, and compromises because what is self-evident to the primitive mind has been forgotten.

For hundreds of thousands of years, until the beginning of civilization about 10,000 years ago, humans lived in tribal societies, which produced tribal consciousness a set of workable ideas or guiding principles concerning living together successfully on a diverse and healthy planet. The invasion of civilization into one tribal locale after another, around the globe, has been so swift and deadly that we may speak of the trauma of civilization. Because tribal peoples were unprepared and unable to deal with the onslaught of civilization, tribal consciousness was driven underground, becoming something forbidden and dangerous. Conquered peoples became afraid to think and act according to the old ways, on pain of death. There is much fear that lies at the origin of civilization.

Ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny that is to say, the development of the individual is an abbreviated repetition of the development of the species. In childhood, a modern person travels an enormous distance between stone-age primitive creature and responsible contemporary citizen. When confronted with the awesome power of civilization whose first representatives are parents, teachers, priests (and, later on, police officers, legislators and bosses) the child faces, psychologically, the same situation as its tribal ancestors, namely, conform to the dictates of civilization or die. The helplessness of childhood makes the threat of bodily harm or loss of love, which is used by the parents and others to enforce civilized morality and civilized education, a traumatic experience. The developing little person becomes afraid to express its own tribal nature. There is much fear that lies at the bottom of becoming a civilized adult.

When the child becomes aware of ideas and impulses that oppose the dictates of civilization, s/he experiences anxiety, which is the signal for danger. It is not the insights and urges themselves that the child fears, but rather the reaction to them on the part of those in charge. Since the child cannot escape from those who control its life, s/he runs away from dangerous thoughts and feelings. In other words, the child institutes repression of its primitive self. Tribal ideas are now isolated, cut off from awareness, and unable to properly influence the future course of events.
The trauma or inescapable terror of civilization is responsible for the derangement of reason. That inner dialogue in the human mind that is the hallmark of self-consciousness has ceased, because the depth-dimension of reflective thought, which is the primitive mind, has been silenced. Modern people no longer hear their own primal voice, and without interaction between new ideas and old ideas, the demands of the individual and the demands of the tribe (and species), there is no deep thinking. On the contrary, when reason is cut off at the roots, it becomes shallow, unable to determine what is of true value in life.

The passage of tribal ideas from the oldest and deepest layer of the mind into individual consciousness is part of the natural, normal functioning of the human mind. Deep thinking is not the result of education; it is innate, our birthright as Homo sapiens. What civilization has done is to disrupt the free flow of ideas in the human mind by shutting down the primitive mind through traumatic socialization. In such a situation, cut off from the time-tested and proven ideas of prehistory, reason becomes one-dimensional, and is unable to solve the problems of modern life. No amount of new information can replace tribal wisdom, which provides the foundation for any good and decent life.

None of what has been said here denies the concept of progress, but it means that genuine progress is the outcome of deep mental dialogue in which new ideas are accepted or rejected by reference to that great complex of old ideas that have been perfected and passed down from one generation to the next generation over many millennia. In other words, genuine progress builds on basic truth. This is not idealization of primitive culture, but conscious recognition of its solid, intelligent achievements. Because civilization repudiates primitive, basic truth, we have no frame of reference for a good and decent life. What we call progress in the modern world is the aimless and reckless rampage of lost individuals. When one is lost, it is necessary to go back to the place where one had one's bearings, and start anew from there.

The False Self

We have internalized our masters, which is a well-known psychological response to trauma. When faced with overwhelming terror, the human mind splits, with part of itself modeling itself after the oppressor. This is an act of appeasement: "Look," the mind says in effect, "I am like you, so do not harm me." As a result of the civilizing process, together with this psychological defense mechanism known as "identification with the aggressor", we now hear the alien voices of the various representatives of civilization in our heads. Because of these alien ego-identifications we no longer hear our own tribal/primal voice. In order for deep thinking to commence again in the human mind, it is necessary to break down these internal authorities, overcome the resistances, that prevent tribal ideas from coming to consciousness. The modern problem is not simply that we do not listen to primal ideas, but rather that primal ideas are unable to come to consciousness at all, because of the internal counterforces, or ego-alien identifications, that contradict and overpower them.

These ego-alien identifications, built up over the course of a lifetime, cohere and form a distinct, circumscribed personality, or false self, that represents and enforces the rules and regulations of civilization. This false self is observable in the frozen facial expressions, stereotypic gestures, and unexamined behavioral patterns of the general public. This false self determines much of our everyday lives, so that we are seldom the origin of our actions. We lapse into the false self at the first sign of danger, under stress, or simply because it is the path of least resistance. In this unthinking mode of social role playing, we internally reproduce our own oppression.

Trauma is a necessary part of civilizing someone, because a natural, maturing individual will not otherwise accept the ideals of civilization. These ideals - hierarchy, property, the State, for example - are so contrary to our tribal nature that they must be forcibly thrust into the human mind. This causes the mind to rupture, to divide its territory that is, to surrender a part of itself to the invading enemy. For this reason, the false self is never really integrated into the human mind, but instead occupies the mind, as a foreign body, standing apart from and above normal/healthy mental life.

The Original Self

Beneath the false self, there still lives the original identity of the person. This original self is older than, and other than, the foreign personality that has been imposed upon it. This original self or primitive ego is the person one was in childhood before the mind was ruptured by the trauma of civilization and the person one still is at the core of one's personal identity. This original self is closely connected to the oldest layer of the psyche. It is an individually differentiated portion of the primitive mind the first, personal organization of the primitive mind. As such, it has direct access to primal wisdom, an internally directed perceptivity, that permits the entry into consciousness, as well as the passage into activity, of tribal ideas.

In civilization, this original self is caught in the middle of a war between the status quo false self and the uprising of the tribal self. Even when an individual succeeds in holding its own personal identity, refusing to slip into the false self, the primal voice may remain unheard, smothered by the false self. As a distinct, circumscribed personality, the false self achieves a counter-will of its own that is always operational in the sick mind, at least in terms of repressing tribal ideas. Tribal ideas threaten civilization, so they cannot pass through the censorship of the false self, which functions specifically to ward off all serious challenges to civilization.

Furthermore, the false self tends to become more autonomous and extensive, owing to improved forms of social control and manipulation of consciousness in the modern world advertising, for example. Once the mind is broken, the false self, backed by the relentless power of civilization, takes over our lives. The original or primary self has become autistic, or severely withdrawn from active engagement with social reality. However, there remains some awareness, at least sometimes, of our primary identity beneath the false self, and so there is hope for lifting the repressions set down most effectively in childhood on primitive mental processes.

The True Self

Through identification, which is a normal psychological basis of personality development, the original identity of the person is stretched into something more and greater, on its path to the true self. This process of identification becomes pathological only when the continuity of the personality is not preserved, i.e. when there is a splitting in two of the mind, giving rise to a new psychic structure, a false self. This rupture of the mind is unfortunately precisely what occurs through compulsory training and education of contemporary civilized human beings. In contrast, the development of the natural and sane human mind does not entail any sharp delimitations between its various stages and functions. The true self is a continuation and culmination of the original self; it develops out of the original self, just as the original self develops out of the tribal self. In sum, psychical reality consists of the tribal self, together with the original self, and the dynamic interplay between them is responsible for the development of the true self. The true self is something that unfolds/progresses. Traumatic civilization has not eliminated the original self, but it has stopped the flow of tribal ideas into consciousness, which arrests or distorts the higher/maturer development of the personality. In order to resume deep thinking in the human mind, so that we can become our true self, it is necessary to push back and ultimately dissolve civilization, internally and externally.

The Message

The sadness of the modern age is that the public needs to be reminded of "unchangeable human needs." This truth is not something to be imposed upon them, but something to be evoked within them. The fact is that people do not feel satisfied in the roles assigned to them by civilization. There is a widespread feeling that one's true identity or potential is not being fulfilled, but unfortunately there is no awareness of the tribal self except among a small minority of individuals. Once the message of a tribal self is re-introduced into public consciousness, it may lie dormant in the minds of individuals for a long time, but it is never entirely forgotten again, as it was in childhood. This message is the catalyst for an intellectual awakening among the population, accompanied by the feeling that something old and familiar has been uncovered.

The power of this message to move an individual is due to the psychological fact that, although repression shuts down deep thinking, tribal ideas continue to push for entrance into consciousness. The mind seeks always to integrate all its ideas into one comprehensible whole. Whatever is part of the repressed unconscious is trying to penetrate into consciousness. When an individual gets the idea of a tribal self from an external source, via the message, it takes hold deep down. The message appeals to the conscious mind, tugs at it, rings true because it touches and stirs the repressed truth that is striving to break into awareness. For this reason, the triumph of civilization over the tribal self is never secure, so there must be a constant bombardment of lies and distortions from the representatives of civilization.

Whether or not an individual awakens to the message of a tribal self depends on the mental condition of one's personal life. Crisis can open a person to ideas that would otherwise be shunned or rejected. A desperate or confused person seeking help may accept the notion of a tribal self intellectually, because it makes sense of one's life-history; but this is not yet to grasp tribal ideas from within, the result of deep mental dialogue. Intellectual awareness of one's tribal self, via the message, is the first prerequisite of a sane person, but it is not enough, not the same thing as hearing one's own primal voice. Each individual must validate or prove, for itself, the message or theory of a tribal self.

The Journey Outward

What is required in order to hear one's own primal voice and resume deep thinking is a journey outward by the original self, which is a matter of fighting to live according to fundamental ideas that one recognizes as good and right, a tribal ideal. This is the path of a warrior because civilization without (laws, institutions, and technologies) and within (the false self) is organized against it. It takes inner resolve and courage to go against civilization, outwardly or inwardly. The path of a tribal warrior in the modern world has nothing to do with picking up a spear or wearing a loin cloth; rather, it involves committing to, and standing up for the great ideas of prehistory: face-to-face democracy, rivers and streams as drinking places, respect for wildlife, etc. These ideas do not require more data, arguments, congresses or conferences because they are the irrefutable elements of original knowledge. The warrior stands on the unshakable foundation of basic truth, and the vicious lies of civilization that the Earth is property, or that the common good results from each person maximizing its own self-interest, for example are dismissed as the meaningless babble of the ignorant.

The psychodynamics of the cure consists in overcoming our fear of deep thinking by strengthening the original ego, through everyday practice, to the point that it no longer turns away from its own subversive ideas. We are afraid to think deeply or critically, due to the horror of the past. It is safer not to think about tribal ideas, and spare oneself the painful memories of punishment (and the attacks of anxiety) that are associated with the recall of these ideas. The childhood fear that one will be murdered or grossly harmed for primitive thinking lives on.

The child settles for an unsatisfactory adaptation to social reality namely, repression of its tribal self because it is unable to deal with the threatening menace of civilization in any other way. However, adults are no longer in the helpless position of childhood; it is no longer necessary to give up the struggle with civilization. There is plenty of opportunity in our everyday lives to question and refuse humiliating and debilitating authority. What matters, for now, is not that we win this or that battle with external reality, but that we stay true to tribal ideas in the face of civilization, and integrate them into the conduct or character of our lives. This is what slowly brings about a radical change in the personality.

The path of a warrior is that of upholding a tribal ideal with the therapeutic aim of bringing a strengthened ego into direct and open communication with the tribal mind, which dissolves the false self (and its punishment mechanism).

The personal journey of loosening the grip of the false self by strengthening the primary self is certainly not by itself going to bring about the overthrow of civilization; but it is the subjective precondition for building an environmental movement that will achieve this end. The public is firmly in the grip of the false self, which means that a revolution is definitely not on the agenda. The influencing machine of civilization is in our heads, and we must defeat it there first; for it is not to be expected that people brutally held down (for 10,000 years) by counter-revolutionary forces will revolt until the psychological groundwork of liberation has been adequately prepared. After enough of us have done the hard inner work of self-restoration, that is, re-claimed enough of our sanity, then we will come together in tribal units and smash civilization.

Crossroads

Human unhappiness within civilization is widespread and growing. People feel increasingly empty, anxious, depressed, and angry. Everyone is seeking an answer to serious mental problems. The Chinese ideogram for crisis combines the sign of "danger" with that of "opportunity." This is exactly where we are in history, at the crossroads between two radically different futures. On the one hand, there is the danger of insanity, and on the other hand, the opportunity for a return of tribalism.

The Path to Insanity

Basic, vital needs or tribal needs are not being satisfied in civilization, and this produces frustration, which in turn activates aggression. As civilization "progresses" toward global interlock among new technological forms, we are removed farther and farther from the simple and basic joys of life, sitting in a shaft of sunlight, conversing around a fire, food-sharing, walking, the blue sky overhead, and so frustration and aggression also progress. More and more of a person's concern and compassion for others and the natural world are withdrawing, and re-focusing on the self, in order to neutralize the growing frustration and anger within. This is the psychological explanation for the culture of selfishness that is underway everywhere in the modern world the first step on the road to insanity.

The second step, which is now on the horizon, is megalomania, a severe pathological state of consciousness in which the steady withdrawal of love from others and nature gives rise to the deluded mental condition of exalted self-importance. The megalomaniac feels more and more powerful, euphoric, and in control of things (due to an abnormally inflated self-love), while in reality s/he is becoming more and more isolated, impotent, and out of control (due to an excessive loss of love for others and nature). This pathological condition of megalomania is fueled by inner hatred, which is desperately seeking pacification by consuming more and more of a person's available love, but it fails entirely to deal with the root-cause of our mental illness, namely, unmet primitive needs.

If people cannot access the tribal ideas that inform them of basic needs, then they cannot find the proper targetnamely, civilizationfor their frustration and aggression. As a result, rage is trapped in our minds and bodies and is destined to reach heights that are psychologically unbearable for any individual, which leads to madness. Insanity, the third and final stage of civilization, occurs when the original self becomes a tortured prisoner within the walls of its own fears, frustrations, and hostility. It is now extremely difficult, if not impossible, to reach and influence the original self with any rational message.

The Path to Sanity

Civilization has enslaved us in the chains of dependency, isolation, and artificiality. All that we have suffered in civilization still exists in our minds for nothing vanishes from the human mind and it is accumulating into rage. The mechanism that civilization employs in order to prevent this rage from discharging itself against its source namely, civilization is the establishment of a dictatorship in our heads, a false self, that re-directs this rage toward the citizen in the form of self-blame. According to the false self, each individual is to blame for its own misery. The false self gets the energy it needs to punish and enslave us from our own blind frustration and aggression. Without conscious commitment to a tribal ideal, a firm hold on basic truth, by which to evaluate, condemn, and go against civilization, a person is at the mercy of its own mounting disappointment and aggression that the false self is designed to turn inward.

The tribal ideal is a staff for strengthening the original self and fighting off the false self. By upholding a tribal ideal, sometimes through the spoken word, sometimes through action, and sometimes through silence, we build self-respect on a solid foundation; for at the core of our being we are still fiercely independent, intelligent creatures, with strong affective ties to small human groups and large natural/wild places.

The importance of this self-respect as a prime motivator of human nature can hardly be overstated; it may enable an individual to defy civilization, even in the face of the hatred of the whole modern world. When an individual acquires fundamental self-respect, then s/he will be made a fool no longer, and all the blows of civilization are nothing but the battle scars of a proud warrior. Civilization is powerless against it, because a person who has re-claimed fundamental self-respect cares nothing about the laws and standards of civilization.

This self-respect leads to genuine self-love, the second and decisive step on the path to sanity, for self-love (and happiness in large measure) consists in becoming one's own ideal again, as in childhood. This self-love eventually overflows and becomes love for others and for external nature. Concern for life on Earth is the result of a surplus of love, or as Nietzsche put it, "abundance in oneself the over-great fullness of life the feeling of plenitude and increased energy." In other words, caring for life on Earth flows from an unbroken and expanding primary and healthy narcissism. Without this caring that flows from self-love, science and ethics will preach in vain for the preservation of biological diversity, ecological integrity, and real wilderness.

The megalomaniac or pathological narcissist has no love for others or for nature, because s/he needs all available psychic energy, and even more, in order to stave off a false self that is becoming more demanding and brutal. In megalomania, the backward flow of love, away from others and nature and toward the self, is a defensive reaction to the underlying reality of intensifying personal hurt and hatred: the original self is becoming weaker, and the false self stronger, because the gross injury to the psyche of the human being, by the trauma of civilization, festers.

Identification with the tribal ideal is the antidote to the massive narcissistic wounds inflicted on us by civilization, and it threatens civilization with disintegration because it goes to the source of our injury and begins to heal it. The third and final stage of the making of a revolutionary or eco-radical occurs when an individual, after arduous intellectual praxis, either remembers or intuits basic truth. The individual now hears its own primal voice, which rises up from within as an unstoppable conscious drive to assist fellow creatures and to make a positive contribution to the planet.

In sum, the path to sanity begins with the awareness of a tribal self. A personal commitment to this ideal builds self-respect, which in turn builds self-love. This self-love eventually overflows to take in others and nature. At last, individuals are psychologically secure and strong enough to enter into cooperative associations with one another in favor of a mass movement aimed at re-establishing small human villages, embedded in a healthy/wild landscape.

Conclusion

When the final crisis of civilization comes in the 21st Century, the present system will do whatever is necessary to perpetuate itself. People who are in the stranglehold of the false self will support whatever the system does, including the exploitation and destruction of National Parks, Designated Wilderness Areas, and The Wildlands Project (whatever it achieves). Unless people possess an assured, sane psychological core, everything else is in jeopardy. The personal pursuit of sanity is, or will shortly become, the overriding issue for the vast majority of people, and toward this end, each person, isolated and fearful in modern society, must be armed with an ideal or vision of what s/he would like to be and should be. There is nothing better to offer people than a tribal ideal. It is, then, up to each person to do the difficult psychological work of personal liberation that must precede real change. This personal task of healing the mind can be and must be accomplished, to a decisive point, in modern-day circumstances.

"I'll Never Work!"

Day after day we get up early and trudge to work. We swallow our pride and put up with being ordered around by the boss. We sweat and toil at jobs we hate, wasting away our lives. Why do we do it? Because we have to? Because we need the money? Or because we don't know how to live any other way?

We work way too hard. Most of us work 40 or more hours a week from when we are 18 years old until after we turn 60. One in four American workers works more than 49 hours a week. One in eight works more than 60 hours a week and one in ten holds down more than one job.

Working this hard is weird and unnatural. For hundreds and thousands of years before the dawn of history, people lived as hunter-gatherers and simple farmers. Hunting and gathering is a pretty relaxed way to make a living. Modern hunter-gatherers like Native Australians "work" less than four hours a day. Even after we gave up the forests and built cities, we still didn't work very hard. During medieval times in Europe, people worked as few as 120 days a year.

There is no reason for us to be working so hard. As advances in technology help us work more productively, we should be able to work less. Today, American workers are ten times more productive than we were 100 years ago. That means, for every hour we work today, we produce as many goods and services as workers produced in ten hours in 1890. That also means we should be able to work one tenth as much, and live just as well, as people did back then. That would be less than eight hours of work a week.

Since we don't work eight hours a week, where did all that extra productivity go? A lot of it went as profits into the pockets of the rich. The rich in America are richer than any other group of people EVER in the history of the world. If we work harder or better, our bosses aren't under any obligation to pay us more or let us work less. Sadly, that's how capitalism works. Capitalism REALLY sucks, but that's beyond the scope of this pamphlet. There are books listed at the end that go into some depth about how capitalism sucks and what we can do about it.)

The rest of that productivity went into "improving" our standard of living. We made a decision to buy more rather than work less. Some of the things we bought really did improve the way we live. Very few homes in 1890 had running water, electricity or flush toilets. But most of what we bought were fluff consumer products like big cars and color TVs that are fun to own, but that we don't really need. The question is: why did we make this choice? Why did we choose to buy more crap instead of working less?

We didn't. American corporations made the choice for us by brain-washing us with advertising. Advertisements are everywhere, telling us we will be happier, better looking, admired, respected and even loved, if we just buy this or that product. of course, we all know that we can't buy happiness or love, but with advertising poking into every part of our lives. it's hard not to give in to the idea that we can buy a better life. Eventually almost everyone does give in to the dull, exhausting trap of work and spend, work and spend, produce and consume.
The price for this choice is high. Work saps our spirit and crushes our sense of freedom. Kissing our boss's ass all day is humiliating. The worst is when we actually get used to being pushed around. Human beings need to be free to develop our independant selves. The more we work, the less we think like free people and the less we think like free people and the more we think like dogs: dull and obedient.

Work takes time from other, better things like being with our families and friends, travelling, making love, drinking beer, painting, writing, reading, playing music, cooking and eating good food, etc. These are the things that make life rich and interesting. Work makes life boring, short and gray.

Work is also killing us. Twenty five thousand American workers are killed each year on the job. Two million more are disabled and 25 million are injured. These numbers don't include the 50 thousand Americans who arekilled each year in car crashes, many of whom are traveling to or from work.

Finally, we can't afford to keep consuming things the way we do. Americans make up only 5% of the world's population, but we consume more than 25% of the wrold's resources and energy. Soon those resources will run out. Our over-producing industies are filling the sky and water with smoke and sludge. Most of the smog in the air comes from people commuting to work in cars. Our consumption habit is ruining the earth.

To keep up the flow of resources into our country, we force the rest of the world (and many poor Americans) to do our dirty work. Poor people in places like Mexico and South Africa sweat al day in factories and mines so that we can have cheap fabric and coal to make our clothes and heat our homes. The median income world-wide is only $2,000 per person a year. The average American makes 65 times the salary of the poorest half of the world. If we could learn to work and consume less, these por people could spend less time working for us, and more time working to feed and house themselves.

If we want to be free, if we want to really live our lives, if we want to live on a healthy planet, if we want to end suffering and exploitation in the world, we will have to learn to work less.

But if I work less, won't I starve?

Most Americans have a terrible fear that if they stop working all the time, they won't be able to afford food and rent. The trick is learning how to work less by learning how to spend a lot less. Living cheap doesn't mean suffering and starving. You can live cheap and also enjoy a comfortable, plentiful life.

If I don't work, what will I do? Working less doesn't mean being unproductive. Take gardening again: Gardening doesn't pay. To make gardening pay, you would have to work like a farmer. But you can easily grow lots of vegetables, possibly enough to live on, simply by goofing around in your garden. Why work?

Life is an adventure if you have the time. There are so many things to do in the world, one person couldn't possibly do them all. It's sad: we get so caught up in our jobs, that whem we get home, we can't tink of anything better to do with ourselves than watch TV. Don't be a zombie slave - quit your job!

Un articol excelent al lui Ilie Sebanescu, in care explica succint traiectoria si scopurile capitalului strain in Romania, si cum a provocat el intrarea in criza actuala:

Pe fond, beneficiarii delirului din perioada 2004-2008 sunt supăraţi acum că de fapt nimic altceva decât consumul pe credit din urmă cu câţiva ani a ajuns să trebuiască a fi plătit, prin scăderi de salarii, prin reduceri de pensii, prin anulări de subvenţii şi alte asemenea.

Căci, să fie clar, creşterea economică obţinută în 2004-2008 era bazată exclusiv pe extinderea consumului pe credit, iar salariile şi pensiile majorate atunci pe seama respectivei creşteri economice erau la fel de efemere ca şi aceasta, urmând a trebui să fie amputate o dată cu dispariţia a ceea ce artificial indusese creşterea economică respectivă, adică finanţarea externă.

Ce a făcut Vestul când l-a lovit criza? A scăzut masiv finanţarea spre Est, staff-urile firmelor decizând ca propriile capitaluri să se întoarcă să apere redutele principale din Vest. Băncile străine din România - până atunci vehiculul expansiunii vestice în România - n-au mai primit bani pentru extindere şi, implicit, au blocat totul în România, întrucât au pus punct consumului şi, corelativ, creşterii economice. În acest fel, au fost activate dintr-o dată, în mod brutal, vulnerabilităţile externe ale ţării, pe care chiar capitalul străin le crease!

"Partea română" (populaţie, firme cu capital românesc, statul) nici nu apucase să facă probleme de plăţi externe ţării. Populaţia nu se împrumutase în străinătate. Firmele cu capital românesc nu fuseseră împrumutate din străinătate. Iar statul avea o datorie derizorie în străinătate şi, oricum, era în grafic cu plăţile. Toate entităţile româneşti, dacă aveau datorii, le aveau la băncile străine din România, fiind vorba de datorii interne, şi nu externe! 80% din datoria externă a ţării era de fapt a firmelor străine din România, a căror expansiune aici fusese finanţată din străinătate.

Acestea aveau plăţi imense de făcut spre străinătate, de fapt îndeosebi spre propriile mame. Totul se contabiliza însă în sume ce trebuiau să iasă ca plăţi din România şi, vai, foarte multe pe termen scurt, căci fusese vorba de sume date subsidiarelor de aici nu cumva pentru investiţii, ci pentru speculaţii pe curs şi pe dobânzi! Capitalul străin angajat în România a aruncat totul asupra ţării-gazdă.

Proprietarii din străinătate ai subsidiarelor din România nu numai că n-au mai finanţat plăţile acestora, deşi era responsabilitatea lor, dar au cerut statului român să le pună la dispoziţie finanţarea pe care încetaseră s-o furnizeze respectivelor subsidiare, ameninţând că, în caz contrar, îşi reduc expunerea financiară pe România, adică pleacă!

Un şantaj de cea mai joasă speţă! Nu că România ar fi pierdut cine ştie ce (ştiindu-se prea bine ce a făcut aici cea mai mare parte din capitalul străin!), dar plecări într-un moment de criză riscă să producă destabilizări, îndeosebi ale monedei naţionale, atât timp cât statul român nu avea bani cu care să echilibreze situaţia.

A fost momentul în care a intervenit în scenă capitalul public din chiar ţările de origine ale capitalului privat responsabil de toată ţărăşenia. Acesta s-a oferit să pună la dispoziţie finanţarea care lipsea! Dar cui? Nu cumva propriilor firme rămase fără finanţare, ci statului român! Acesta este de fapt acordul cu FMI-UE! Cine plăteşte? Statul român, fie că este vorba de Guvern sau de banca centrală, respectiv contribuabilul român!

Păi, cum vine treaba asta, fraţilor? Vasăzică, România - indiferent dacă a lui Iliescu şi Năstase, sau a lui Tăriceanu, sau a lui Băsescu şi Boc - primeşte aproape ca pe o mântuire capitalul privat vestic, acesta face ravagii aici (indiferent dacă unii se fac că nu le văd şi continuă să fredoneze aria mântuirii de către capitalul străin) şi când ravagiile dau pe de lături este chemat capitalul public din Vest să rezolve situaţia. Iar acesta pune statul-gazdă să plătească şi îşi salvează capitalul privat propriu, dar bagă statul-gazdă ca şi în mormânt. Atâţia de prin Occident - din păcate, unii chiar cu certificat de premiaţi Nobel - numesc această chestie jenantă "globalizare" şi îi cântă virtuţile. (va continua)

Lee Van Cleef was awesome, a human gargoyle. It's amazing the bird cawing in the distance during the the pause in the music, great sound editing.
Lee Van Cleef died in '89 of a heart attack. He also was a wonderful artist. He mostly painted landscapes. He was terrific in the movie "The Big Gundown". He was the star. He was once no. 1 box office star in Europe. He made quite a few "spaghetti westerns" there.
Lee Van Cleef lost the tip of that finger while making a doll house for his daughter. He made many movies, was in plenty of tv shows. Clint Eastwood actually gave Lee the nickname "Angel Eyes".

Nimeni nu ar trebui să muncească vreodată.
Munca este sursa aproape tuturor nenorocirilor din lume. Aproape orice rău poţi numi deriva din muncă sau din traiul într-o lume concepută pentru muncă. Pentru a nu mai suferi, trebuie să ne oprim din a mai munci.
Asta nu înseamnă că trebuie să ne oprim din a mai face orice. Înseamna că trebuie să creem un nou mod de viaţă bazat pe joacă ; cu alte cuvinte, o revoluţie ludică. Prin „joacă” înţeleg de asemenea festivităţi, creativitate, convieţuire, comensalitate şi poate chiar şi arta. Există mai multe în joacă comparativ cu joaca unui copil, oricât de valoroasă ar fi aceasta. Fac un apel către o aventură colectivă de o bucurie generalizată şi de o exuberanţă interdependentă nestingherită. Joaca nu este pasivă. Fără îndoială că toţi avem nevoie de mai mult timp pentru trândăvie completă decât avem acum la dispoziţie, indiferent de venit sau ocupaţie, dar odată ce ne vom reveni din epuizarea indusă de slujba, aproape toţi vom vrea să acţionam.

Viaţa ludică este total incompatibilă cu realitatea existentă. Cu atât mai rău pentru „realitate” , acea gaură-neagră ce absoarbe toată vitalitatea din puţinul vieţii ce încă se deosebeşte de simpla supravieţuire. În mod curios - sau poate nu - toate vechile ideologii sunt conservatoare prin credinţa lor în muncă. Unele din ele, precum marxismul şi multe ramuri ale anarhismului, cred în muncă cu atât mai puternic, deoarece cred atât de puţin în altceva.

Liberalii spun că ar trebui să oprim discriminarea la angajare. Eu spun că ar trebui să oprim angajarea. Conservatorii susţin legile dreptului la muncă. La fel ca şi fiul adoptiv a lui Karl Marx, Paul Lafargue, eu susţin dreptul la lene. Cei de stânga favorizează angajarea totală. La fel ca suprarealiştii- numai că eu nu glumesc- eu favorizez şomajul total. Trotsky-iştii agită pentru o revoluţie permanentă. Eu agit pentru o distracţie permanentă. Dar chiar dacă toţi ideologii promovează munca (ceea ce şi fac) - şi nu doar pentru că au de gând să-i facă pe alţii să muncească în locul lor -sunt foarte şovăielnici în a face asta în mod direct. Vor vorbi la nesfârşit despre salarii, program de muncă, condiţii de muncă, exploatare, productivitate, profitabilitate. Vor vorbi cu plăcere despre orice în afară de munca în sine. Aceşti experţi care se oferă să gândească în locul nostru îşi împărtăsşsc rareori concluziile în privinţa muncii, cu toată importanţa pe care o are în vieţile noastre.
Sndicatele şi patronii sunt de acord că se cuvine să ne vindem timpul din viaţa noastra în schimbul supravieţuirii, cu toate că se ceartă asupra preţului. Marxiştii cred că ar trebui să fim conduşi de birocraţi. Libertarienii cred că ar trebui să fim conduşi de oameni de afaceri. Feministelor nu le pasă ce formă ia conducerea, atât timp cât conducătorii sunt femei. În mod clar, aceşti vânzători de ideologii au diferenţe serioase asupra modului în care să îşi împartă răsfăţurile puterii. La fel de clar, nici unul dintre ei nu are vreo obiecţie privind puterea în sine, şi toţi vor să ne facă să muncim în continuare.
Poate că vă întrebaţi dacă glumesc sau sunt serios. Glumesc şi sunt serios în acelaşi timp. A fi ludic nu înseamnă a fi ridicol. Joaca nu trebuie să fie frivolă, cu toate că frivolitatea nu este acelaşi lucru cu trivialitatea ; ar trebui să luăm mai des frivolitatea în mod serios. Aş vrea ca viaţa să fie un joc- dar un joc cu mize mari. Aş vrea să joc pentru totdeauna.
Alternativa la muncă nu este doar trândăvia. A fi ludic nu înseamnă a fi foarte ludic. Oricât aş preţui plăcerea inactivităţii, totuşi niciodată nu este atât de placută ca atunci când punctează alte plăceri şi distracţii.dar nici nu încurajez acea valvă de siguranţă controlată, de timp disciplinat, numită „timp liber” ; departe de mine acest gând. Timpul liber este non-munca de dragul muncii. Timpul liber este un timp pe care îl folosim ca să ne revenim după muncă şi îl petrecem în încercarea nebunească şi fără speranţă de a uita de muncă. Mulţi oameni se întorc din vacanţă atât de abătuţi încat aşteaptă să se întoarcă la locul de muncă pentru a se odihni. Principala diferenţă dintre munca şi timpul liber este ca la muncă măcar eşti plătit pentru alienarea şi moleşirea ta.
Nu mă joc cu definiţiile aici. Când spun că vreau să abolesc munca intenţionez exact ceea ce spun, dar vreau să spun ceea ce intenţionez prin definirea termenilor în mod non-idiosincratic. Definiţia mea minimă asupra muncii este serviciu „forţat” ; ceea ce înseamnă producţie obligatorie. Ambele elemente sunt esenţiale. Munca înseamnă producţie impusă prin mijloace economice sau politice, dar nu orice creaţie înseamnă muncă. Munca nu este făcută niciodată doar de dragul de a fi făcută, ci datorită faptului că unele dintre produsele realizate ajung la muncitor (sau mai curând la altcineva). Aceasta este munca ca o necesitate. A o defini înseamnă a o dispreţui. Dar uneori munca este chiar mai îngrozitoare decât decreta definiţia ei. Dinamica dominaţiei întrinseca muncii tinde în timp către minuţiozitate. În societăţile avansate, saturate de muncă, excluzând toate societăţile industriale, fie capitaliste fie „comuniste”, munca dobândeşte în mod invariabil alte atribute ce îi accentuează caracterul insuportabil.
De obicei - şi asta este mai vizibil în ţările „comuniste” decât în cele capitaliste, acolo unde statul este aproape singurul patron şi toată lumea angajată -munca înseamnă a fi angajat, ceea ce este echivalent cu a te vinde în rate. Astfel, 95% dintre americanii care muncesc, muncesc pentru altcineva (sau altceva). În Cuba sau China, sau în orice alt model „alternativ”, cifre corespunzătoare se aproprie de 100%. Numai bastioanele rurale ale Lumii a Treia- Mexic, India, Brazilia, Turcia -adăpostesc temporar concentraţii semnificative de agricultori ce perpetuează învoiala tradiţională a celor mai mulţi lucrători din ultimele câteva milenii, adică plata de taxe (=rascumpărare) către stat, sau închirierea către nişte moşieri parazitari, în schimbul lăsării lor în pace. Toţi muncitorii din sectorul industrial (şi din biroruri) sunt angajaţi şi sunt ţinuţi sub genul de supraveghere ce asigură servilismul.
Dar munca modernă are implicaţii mult mai rele. Oamenii nu doar muncesc, ei au „slujbe”. O singură persoană execută o singură sarcină tot timpul, fără a avea de ales. Chiar dacă acea sarcină are un cuantum de interes întrinsec (ceea ce multe slujbe nu au), monotonia exclusivităţii sale obligatorii epuizează potenţialul său ludic. O „slujbă” ce poate corela energiile unor indivizi, pentru o perioadă rezonabilă de timp, doar de dragul de a o face, este doar o povară pentru cei ce trebuie să o faca pentru patruzeci de ore pe săptămână fără a putea avea un cuvânt de spus asupra modului de execuţie, pentru profitul proprietarilor care nu contribuie cu nimic la acest proiect, şi fără posibilitatea de a împărţi sarcinile celor ce trebuie cu adevărat să o execute. Aceasta este adevărata lume a muncii : o lume a gafelor birocratice, a hârţuirii sexuale şi a discriminări, a patronilor bătuţi în cap ce exploatează şi aruncă vina pe subordonaţii lor, ce - după orice criterii rational-tehnice - dau comenzile. Dar în lumea reală, capitalismul subordonează maximalizarea raţională a productivităţii şi profitului, exigenţelor controlului organizator.
Degradarea pe care cei mai mulţi muncitori o simt în timpul serviciului este suma ofenselor ce poate fi numită „disciplină”. Foucalt a complicat acest fenomen,
dar este totuşi destul de simplu. Disciplina constă în totalitatea controlului totalitar de la locul de muncă : supraveghere, munca peste program, o viteză de lucru impusă, cote de producţie, frecarea la cap etc. Disciplina este ceea ce au în comun fabrica, biroul şi magazinul cu închisoarea şi spitalul de boli mintale. Este ceva original şi oribil din punct de vedere istoric. Este ceva ce a întrecut capacităţile unor dictatori demonici de odinioară precum Nero, Gingis-Han şi Ivan cel Groaznic. Cu toate intenţiile lor rele, nu aveau totuşi acele mijloace pentru a-şi controla supuşii atât de complet, aşa cum o fac despoţii noştri moderni. Disciplina este modul de control modern cel mai distinctiv şi diabolic, este o intruziune inovatoare ce trebuie interzisă cu prima oportunitate.
Aşa este munca. Joaca este exact opusul. Joaca este făcuta totdeauna în mod voluntar. Ceea ce ar fi putut fi joaca, devine munca dacă este facută în mod forţat. Aceasta este o axiomă. Bernie de Koven a definit joaca ca pe o „suspendare a consecinţelor”. Această definiţie este inacceptabilă dacă implică faptul că joaca este inconsecventă. Asta nu înseamnă că orice consecinţe vor fi gratuite. Joaca şi dăruitul sunt strâns legate între ele, sunt faţetele comportamentale şi tranzacţionale ale aceluiaşi impuls, ale instinctului de joacă. Ele împărtăşesc un dispreţ aristocratic pentru rezultate. Cel ce se joacă obţine totuşi ceva din joaca sa ; de asta se numeşte joacă. Dar miezul recompensei este chiar experienţa activităţii în sine (oricare ar fi acesta). Alţi cercetători adenpţi ai subiectului „joacă”, precum Johan Huizinga (Homo Ludens) o definesc ca pe o competiţie cu reguli de respectat. Îi respect erudiţia lui Huizinga, însă îi resping în mod vehement constrângerile. Există multe jocuri (şah, baseball, Monopoly, bridge) ce sunt guvernate de reguli, însa există mai multe în joacă decât în acest tip de jocuri. Conversaţiile, sexul, dansul, călătoritul - aceste practici nu au reguli dar în mod sigur le-aş defini drept joacă. Iar cu regulile ne putem juca cu la fel de multă plăcere, ca şi cu orice altceva.
Munca îşi bate joc de libertate. În mod oficial, toţi avem drepturi şi trăim în democraţie. Alţii, mai puţin norocoşi, ce nu sunt liberi aşa cum suntem noi, trebuie să trăiască în state poliţieneşti. Aceste victime nu au altă opţiune decât cea de a se supune ordinelor, indiferent cât de arbitrare. Autorităţile îi mentţn sub supraveghere constantă. Birocraţii statului controlează până şi cele mai mici detalii ale vieţii de zi cu zi. Oficialităţile ce îi pun în funcţiune, răspund numai în faţa superiorilor, publici sau privaţi. În orice caz, dizidenţa şi disobedienţa sunt pedepsite. Informatorii raportează în mod regulat autorităţilor. Toate acestea ar trebui să fie nişte lucruri extrem de grave.
Şi aşa şi sunt, cu toate că nu este decât descrierea unui loc de muncă modern. Liberalii, conservatorii şi libertarienii ce deplâng totalitarismul sunt falşi şi ipocriţi. Există mai multă libertate într-o dictatură de - Stalinizată moderată, decât există într-un loc de muncă obişnuit în America. Vei găsi acelaşi tip de disciplină într-un birou sau într-o fabrică, ca într-o închisoare sau mănăstire. De fapt, asşa cum au arătat Foucalt şi alţii, închisorile şi fabricile au apărut cam în aceeaşi perioadă, iar operatorii lor au împrumutat în mod conştient din tehnicile de control ale celuilalt. Un muncitor este un sclav cu jumătate de normă. Patronul îţi spune când să vii, când să pleci, şi ce să faci între timp. Tot el îţi spune când trebuie să lucrezi şi cât de repede trebuie să o faci. El este liber să-şi exercite controlul până la limite umilitoare, impunându-ţi dacă doreşte, ce haine să porţi sau cât de des să mergi la toaletă. În afara câtorva excepţii, el te poate concedia pentru orice motiv, sau chiar fără motiv. Te spioneaza prin „cârtiţe” şi supraveghetori şi întocmeşte un dosar cu rapoarte pentru fiecare angajat. Daca îi răspunzi, se numeşte „insubordonare”, ca şi cum muncitorul ar fi un copil obraznic, şi nu numai că vei fi concediat, dar ţi se vor şi reduce din compensaţiile din
timpul şomajului. Este de remarcat faptul că un tratament similar li se aplică şi copiilor, la şcoală sau acasă, justificat în cazul lor de presupusa lor imaturitate. Ce spune asta despre părinţii şi profesorii lor care muncesc ?
Acest sistem de dominare pe care l-am descris stăpâneşte peste jumătate din orele vieţii majorităţii femeilor şi bărbaţilor de decenii, pentru majoritatea duratei vieţii lor. Din anumite motive este prea amăgitor să numim sistemul nostru democraţie, capitalism, sau - mai bine zis - industrialism, atunci când adevăratele sale nume sunt „fascism de fabrică” şi „oligarhie de birou”. Oricine spune că aceşti oameni sunt liberi, minte sau e un prost. Eşti ceea ce faci. Dacă faci o muncă plictisitoare, stupidă şi monotonă, există mari şanse să devii plictisitor, stupid şi monoton. Munca este o explicaţie mult mai bună pentru cretinizarea din jurul nostru, decât unele mecanisme imbecile precum televiziunea şi sistemul educaţional. Oamenii care sunt regimentaţi toată viaţa lor, predaţi muncii de câte şcoală şi izolaţi de către familie la începutul vieţii şi de către sanatorii la sfârşitul ei, se obişnuiesc cu ierarhia şi devin înrobiţi psihologic. Aptitudinea pentru autonomie le este atât de atrofiată încât frica lor de libertate este printre puţinele lor fobii întemeiate pe raţiune. Obedienţa cu care sunt instruiţi la serviciu se resfrânge şi în familiile pe care le întemeiază, astfel reproducând sistemul în mai multe direcţii, atât în politică, cultură cât şi în orice altceva. Odată extrasă vitalitatea oamenilor prin muncă, în mod sigur ei se vor supune ierarhiei şi expertizei din orice domeniu. Doar sunt deja obişnuiţi cu asta.
Suntem atât de apropiaţi de lumea muncii încat nu putem vedea care îi sunt efectele. Trebuie să ne bazăm pe observatori din afara timpului şi culturii noastre pentru a putea aprecia poziţia extremă si patologică în care ne aflăm la timpul prezent. A fost o vreme în trecutul nostru, când „etica muncii” ar fi părut de neînţeles, şi poate că Weber avea dreptate când legase apariţia ei de cea a unei religii, Calvinismul, ce dacă ar fi apărut astăzi în loc de acum patru secole, ar fi fost imediat şi în mod corect etichetata drept cult. Acestea fiind circumstanţele, trebuie să apelăm la înţelepciunea vechimii pentru a putea avea o perspectivă clară asupra muncii. Înaintaşii noştri vedeau munca în adevăratul ei sens şi percepţia lor a predominat, ideile fixe ale calviniştilor neputând face faţă, până când a fost răsturnată de industrialism - dar nu înainte de a primi sprijinul profeţilor săi.
Haide-ţi să pretindem pentru o clipă că munca nu îi transformă pe oameni în supuşi ridicoli. Să pretindem, în ciuda oricărei psihologii plauzibile şi a ideologiilor susţinătorilor ei, că nu are nici un efect asupra formării caracterului. Şi haideţi să pretindem că munca nu este atât de plictisitoare, obositoare şi umilitoare precum ştim toţi că este. Chiar şi aşa, munca şi-ar bate joc de toate aspiraţiile umaniste şi democratice, doar pentru că ocupă atât de mult din timpul nostru. Socrate spunea că lucrătorii manuali nu sunt buni ca prieteni sau cetăţeni, pentru că nu au timp să-şi împlinească responsabilităţile de prieten sau cetăţean. Avea dreptate. Din cauza muncii, nu contează ce facem, ne tot uităm la ceas. Singurul lucru liber la aşa numitul „timp liber” este că nu îl costă nimic pe patron. „Timpul liber” este dedicat în mare parte pregătirii pentru muncă, mersului la muncă, intoarcerii de la muncă şi refacerii după muncă. Timpul liber este un eufemism pentru modul bizar prin care munca, ca un factor de producţie, nu numai că se auto-transportă pe propriul cost spre şi în afara locului de muncă, dar îşi asumă şi o responsabilitate pentru propria întreţinere şi reparaţie. Cărbunii şi oţelul nu fac asta. Strungurile şi maşinile de scris nu fac asta. Nu e de mirare că într-unul din filmele sale cu gangsteri, Edward G. Robinson exclama: „Munca este pentru fraieri !”
Plato şi Xenofon îi atribuie lui Socrate şi împărtăşesc cu el credinţa în efectele secundare ale muncii asupra vieţii de cetăţean şi de fiinţă umană a muncitorului. Herodot a identificat că dispreţul pentru muncă era un atribut al vechilor greci La zenitul culturii lor .Ca un exemplu din lumea romană, Cicero a spus că „oricine îşi oferă serviciile pentru bani, se vinde pe el însuşi şi se aşează pe sine în rândul sclavilor”. Candoarea sa este astăzi un lucru rar, dar unele societăţi primitive contemporane la care suntem obisnuiţi să privim cu superioritate, au oferit purtătorii de cuvânt ce i-au iluminat pe antropologii din Vest. Conform lui Posposil, populaţia Kapauku din vestul Iranului are o concepţie de echilibru în viaţă, muncind doar unele zile, zilele de odihnă fiind petrecute pentru „redobândirea puterii şi a sănătăţii pierdute”. Strămoşii noştri, chiar şi în secolul XVIII când deja se aflau de multă vreme pe calea care ne-a adus în situaţia actuală, cel puţin încă erau conştienţi de ceea ce noi am uitat complet, de faţa nevăzută a industrializării. Devoţiunea lor religioasă pentru „Sf.Luni” - astfel stabilind săptămâna de lucru la cinci zile cu 150-200 ani înainte de recunoaşterea legală - era disperarea primilor proprietari de fabrici. A durat mult până s-au supus tiraniei clopotului, predecesor al ceasului mecanic. De fapt a fost nevoie de o generaţie sau două pentru a înlocui bărbaţii adulţi cu femei deja obişnuite cu supunere, şi copii ce puteau fi modelaţi pentru a servi nevoilor industrializării. Chiar şi ţăranii exploataţi ai Vechiului Regim (din Franţa) reuşeau să smulgă destul de mult timp din munca depusă pentru moşierii lor. Conform lui Lafargue, un sfert din calendarul ţăranilor francezi era dedicat Duminicilor si sărbătorilor, iar datele lui Chayanov despre satele din Rusia ţaristă - cu greu putând fi numită o societate progresistă - arată deasemenea că o pătrime sau o cincime din zilele anului erau dedicate repaosului. Datorită controlului productivităţii, noi suntem cu siguranţă cu mult în urma acestor societăţi înapoiate. Mujicii exploataţi s-ar întreba de ce mai muncim până la urmă. Asta ar trebui să facem şi noi.
Oricum, pentru a putea înţelege enormitatea completă a deteriorării noastre, trebuie să luăm în considerare situaţia timpurie a umanităţii, atunci când hoinăream ca vânători - culegători. Hobbes presupunea că pe atunci viaţa era neplăcută, brutală şi scurtă. Alţii presupun că viaţa era o inevitabilă luptă disperată pentru subzistenţa, un război purtat împotriva unei Naturi dure, moartea şi dezastrul aşteptându-l pe cel ghinionist, sau pe oricine nu se putea menţine în provocarea luptei pentru existenţă. De fapt, aceasta era doar o proiecţie a fricii de cădere a autoriăţii guvernelor proiectată asupra comunităţilor neobişnuite a se descurca în lipsa lor, aşa cum era Anglia lui Hobbes în timpul Războiului Civil. Compatrioţii lui Hobbes întâlniseră deja forme alternative de societăţi ce ilustrau alte moduri de viaţă - în mod special în nordul Americii - dar acestea erau prea diferite ca stil de viaţă pentru a le putea înţelege. Antropologul Marshall Sahlins, cercetând datele despre vânători-culegători contemporani a făcut praf mitul lui Hobbes într-un articol intitulat „Societatea afluentă originală”. Ei muncesc mult mai puţin decât noi, iar munca lor se distinge cu greu de ceea ce noi privim drept joacă. Aşa cum a spus el : „Animalul munceşte atunci când constrângerea este sursa activităţii sale, şi se joacă atunci când sursa este puterea sa completă, atunci când viaţa superabundentă este propriul stimul pentru activitate”. Joaca şi libertatea sunt coextensive în priviinţa producţiei. Chiar şi Marx, care aparţine pantalonului productiviştilor (cu toate bunele lui intenţii) a observat că „tărâmul libertăţii nu va putea fi descoperit până nu se va trece de punctul în care munca este necesară sub obligativitatea necesităţii şi a utilajelor externe”. El nu a reuşit niciodată să identifice circumstanţe fericite a abolirii muncii - este mai degrabă anormal, totuşi să fii pro-muncitor si anti-muncă - dar noi am reuşit.
Aspiraţia de a ajunge, sau de a reveni la o viaţă fără muncă este evidentă în toată istoria socială sau culturală a Europei pre-industriale, aşa cum se poate vedea în: „Anglia în tranziţie” de M. Dorothy George şi „Cultura populară în Europa Modernă timpurie” a lui Peter Bulke. La fel de pertinent este şi eseul lui Daniel Bell „Munca şi neplăcerile ei”, primul text cred, care se referă la „revolta împotriva muncii” în atât de multe rânduri, încât dacă ar fi fost înţeles, ar fi reprezentat o corecţie importantă la volumul în care a fost inclus, („Sfârşitul ideologiei”). Nici cei ce au criticat lucrarea, nici cei ce au apreciat-o nu şi-au dat seama că teza „Sfârşitului ideologiei” scrisă de Bell, nu semnala sfârşitul neliniştilor sociale, ci începutul unei noi faze netrasate, neconstrânse şi neinformate de vreo ideologie. A fost Seymour Lipset (în „Omul Politic”) nu Bell, care a declarat că „problemele fundamentale ale Revoluţiei Industriale au fost rezolvate, numai cu câţiva ani înainte de nemulţumirile post sau meta-industriale ale studenţilor ce au gonit-o pe Lipset de la UCBerkley la relativa (şi temporara) pace de la Harvard.
Dupa cum nota Bell în „Bogăţia naţiunilor”, Adam Smith, cu tot entuziasmul său pentru economia de piaţă şi diviziunea muncii, era mult mai conştient (şi mai sincer) de efectele negative ale muncii, decât Ayn Rand sau economiştii de la Chicago sau oricare dintre epigoniile moderne ale lui Smith. Aşa cum observa Smith: „Puterea de înţelegere a mare parte din oameni este în mod necesar formată din slujba lor obişnuită. Omul a cărui viaţă este petrecută în executarea câtorva operaţiuni simple …nu are nici o şansă să-şi exercite puterea de înţelegere… În general el devine atât de stupid şi ignorant pe cât este posibil să devină o fiinţă umană”. Asta este critica mea adusă muncii, în câteva cuvinte grosolane. Bell, scriind în 1956, în Epoca de Aur a imbecilităţii lui Eisenhower si a auto-satisfacţiei americane, a prevăzut dezorganizata stare proastă a lucrurilor din anii 1970 şi ulterioara acestora, cea pe care nici o tendinţă politică nu o poate dezbate, cea identificată în raportul HEW: „Work in
America”, cea care nu poate fi exploatată, aşadar este ignorată. Problema este rezolvată împotriva muncii. Ea în textele economiştilor de tip Laissez-faire (Milton Friedman, Murray Rothbard, Richard Posner), pentru ca în termenii lor, aşa cum se spune în „Pierdut în Spaţiu”, „această variantă nu se ia în calcul”.
Dacă aceste obiecţii, aduse de iubitori ai libertăţii, nu reuşesc să-i convingă pe umaniştii cu tendinţe utilitariene sau chiar paterne, atunci mai există şi altele pe care nu au cum să nu le ia în considerare. Munca este periculoasă pentru sănătatea ta, pentru a cita titlul unei cărţi. De fapt munca înseamnă crimă în masă sau genocid. În mod direct sau indirect, munca îi va omorî pe majoritatea celor ce citesc aceste rânduri. Între 14000 şi 25000 de muncitori sunt ucişi anual în aceasta ţară în timpul serviciului. Între 20 şi 25 de milioane sunt răniţi în fiecare an. Toate aceste cifre sunt bazate pe o estimare foarte conservatoare a ceea ce constituie o rănire cauzată de muncă. Astfel, nu se iau în calcul cele jumătate de million de cazuri de boli profesionale înregistrate în fiecare an. Am văzut un manual medical despre boli profesionale ce avea 1200 de pagini. Chiar şi aşa, asta este abia suprafaţa. Statisticile disponibile arată că există 100000 de cazuri evidenţe de mineri ce au antracoză, dintre care 4000 mor în fiecare an. Ceea ce statisticile nu arată este că zeci de milioane de oameni au vieţile scurtate datorită muncii - ceea ce înseamnă omucidere până la urmă. Luaţi în considerare doctorii care munceau până la moarte, la sfârşitul vârstei de 50 de ani. Luaţi în considerare pe toţi ceilalţi fanatici ai muncii.
Chiar dacă nu eşti ucis sau schilodit în timpul serviciului, s-ar putea foarte uşor să fii în timp ce mergi la serviciu, în timp ce pleci de la serviciu, în timp ce îţi cauţi un loc de muncă, sau în timp ce încerci să uiţi de serviciu. Vasta majoritate a victimelor automobilelor sunt datorate acestor activităţi obligatorii legate de muncă sau celor ce execută aceste activităţi. Acestei liste de cadrave aflată în creştere îi trebuie adăugate şi victimele poluării industriale şi ale alcoolismului şi dependenţei de droguri provocate de muncă. Cancerul şi bolile de inimă sunt afecţiuni moderne, ce se leagă, direct sau indirect, de muncă.
Deci munca instituţionalizează omuciderea şi o transformă într-un mod de viaţă. Lumea crede că cambodgienii erau nebuni pentru că se auto-exterminau, dar suntem noi atât de diferiţi? Regimul lui Pol Pot cel puţin avea o viziune, cu toate că destul de voalată, a unei societăţi egaltare. Noi ne omorâm proprii oameni cu sutele de mii (cel puţin) pentru a vinde hamburgeri Big Mac şi maşini Cadillac supravieţuitorilor. Cele 40 sau 50 de mii de morţi ai accidentelor rutiere de pe autostrăzi sunt victime, nu martiri. Au murit degeaba - sau mai bine spus au murit pentru muncă. Dar munca nu este ceva pentru care merită să mori.
Controlul statului asupra economiei nu este o soluţie. Munca este chiar mai periculoasă în statele socialiste decât este în ţara noastră. Mii de muncitori ruşi au murit sau au fost răniţi în timpul construcţiei tunelelor pentru metroul din Moscova, Cernobâl şi alte dezastre nucleare din Uniunea Sovietică ascunse până recent fac ca dezastrele de la Time Beach si Three Mile Island - dar nu şi pe cel de la Bhopal să pară nişte jocuri de copii. Pe de altă parte, liberalizarea pieţei. La modă acum, nu va ajuta ci probabil va înrăutăţi situaţia. Din punct de vedere al sănătăţii şi siguranţei, printre altele, munca a cunoscut cele mai rele zile atunci când economia se apropia de laissez-faire. Istorici precum Eugene Genovese au argumentat cu convingere că (aşa cum insistaseră susţinătorii sclaviei înainte de război) muncitorii salarizaţi din fabricile din statele nord-Americane şi din Europa trăiau mult mai rău decât sclavii de pe plantaţiile din sudul Americii. Nici o recompensă a relaţiilor dintre birocraţi şi oamenii de afaceri nu pare să aducă vreo schimbare atunci când se ajunge la producţie. O implementare serioasă a standardelor mai degrabă vagi impuse în teorie
de către OSHA, ar aduce în mod foarte probabil economia în impas. Celor de la conducere se pare că le convine situaţia, deoarece nici măcar nu încearca să servească împotriva factorilor perturbători.
Ceea ce am spus până acum nu ar trebui să fie un subiect de controversă. Mulţi muncitori s-au săturat de muncă. Se înmulţesc cazurile de absenteism, randament scăzut, furt şi sabotaj, greve sălbatice şi cyberslacking. Poate există o mişcare către o respingere conştientă şi nu doar viscerală a muncii. Şi totuşi, sentimentul predominant conform căruia munca este necesară şi inevitabilă este universal răspândit atât printre patroni şi agenţii lor, cât şi printre angajaţi.
Nu sunt de acord cu asta. Este posibil să abolim munca acum, şi să o înlocuim cu o multitudine de noi feluri de activităţi libere, ce servesc şi unor scopuri folositoare. Pentru a putea aboli munca, trebuie să o atacăm din două direcţii, cantitativă şi calitativă. Pe de o parte, pe cea cantitativă, ar trebui să reducem masiv cantitatea de muncă depusă. În prezent, majoritatea muncii este inutilă sau chiar mai rău şi ar trebui pur şi simplu să scăpăm de ea. Pe de altă parte - şi aici cred că este miezul problemei şi punctul de plecare pentru o abordare revoluţionară a muncii- ar trebui să transformăm timpul pe care înca îl mai petreceam muncind într-o varietate de distracţii asemănătoare unor meserii, de nedeosebit de alte distracţii plăcute, exceptând faptul că odata încheiate, vor rezulta nişte obiecte folositoare. Cu siguranţă că asta nu va face activităţile mai puţin atrăgătoare. Atunci toate barierele artificiale ale puterii şi proprietăţii ar cădea de la sine. Creaţia s-ar transforma în recreere. Şi ne vom opri din a ne mai fi frică unii de alţii.
Nu sugerez că majoritatea tipurilor de muncă pot fi salvate în felul ăsta. Dar oricum majoritatea muncii nu merită să fie salvată. Numai o mică parte a muncii serveşte unui scop folositor independent de reproducţie şi apărarea sistemului muncii şi a anexelor sale politice şi legale. Acum 30 de ani, Paul şi Percival Goodman au estimat că doar 5 procente din munca depusă la acea dată - presupun că procentul este mai mic acum - ar fi suficientă pentru a satisface nevoile minime de hrană, îmbrăcăminte şi adăpost. Aceasta este doar o preocupare „educată”, dar concluzia este clară: direct sau indirect, cea mai mare parte a muncii serveşte scopurilor neproductive ale comerţului şi controlului social. Din start putem elibera zeci de milioane de vânzători, soldaţi, manageri, poliţişti, brokeri, preoţi, bancheri, avocaţi, profesori, moşieri, paznici, agenţi de publicitate şi pe oricine lucrează pentru aceştia. Se va produce un efect de „bulgăre de zăpadă” întrucât de fiecare dată când şomează un mahâr, lacheii şi subordonaţii săi vor fi deasemenea eliberaţi. Astfel economia implodează.
40% din forţa de muncă este ocupată de „muncitori cu gulere albe”, majoritatea dintre ei având cele mai plictistoare şi stupide slujbe concepute vreodată. Întregi industrii, ca de exemplu asigurările, serviciile bancare şi cele imobiliare nu constau decât in birocraţia inutilă. Nu este de mirare că „sectorul terţiar”, sectorul serviciilor se află în creştere, în timp ce „sectorul secundar” (industria stagnează, iar „sectorul primar” (agricultura) aproape că dispare. Pentru că munca nu este necesară decât pentru cei a căror putere o asigură, muncitorii sunt mutaţi de la nişte ocupaţii relativ folositoare la unele relativ nefolositoare, ca măsură de a asigura ordinea publică. Orice este mai bine decât nimic. De asta nu poţi pleca acasă doar pentru că ai terminat treaba mai devreme. Ei vor timpul tău, destul de mult pentru a te face al lor, chiar dacă de majoritatea timpului tău nu au defapt nevoie. Altfel de ce nu a scăzut media de ore muncite pe săptămână cu mai mult de câteva minute în ultimii 60 de ani ?
Apoi putem ataca munca productivă în sine. Gata cu producţia de război, energia nucleară, mâncarea nesănătoasă (junk-food), produsele de igiena feminină - şi mai presus de toate gata cu industria automobilelor. Un Stanley Steamer sau un Model T ar fi în regulă, dar auto-eroticismul de care depind Detroit şi Los Angeles nu intră în discuţie. Deja, fără a ne strădui prea mult, am rezolvat în mod virtual criza energetică, criza mediului inconjurător şi diverse alte probleme sociale de nerezolvat.
La final, trebuie să scăpăm de cea mai răspândită ocupaţie, cea cu cele mai multe ore, cea mai mică plată şi unele dintre cele mai plictisitoare sarcini. Mă refer la soţiile ce fac munci casnice şi cresc copii. Prin abolirea muncii salarizate şi dobândirea şomajului total, vom submina diviziunea pe bază de sexe a muncii. Familia nucleară aşa cum este ea cunoscută astăzi este o adaptare inevitabilă la diviziunea muncii impuse de munca salarizată modernă. Fie că vă place sau nu, după cum au decurs lucrurile în ultimele două secole, a devenit raţional din punct de vedere economic ca bărbatul să aducă mâncarea acasă, femeia să facă toate treburile casnice murdare şi să-i ofere bărbatului un refugiu în faţa lumii neîndurătoare, iar copiii să fie împinşi în lagărele de concentrare pentru tineret numite „şcoli”, în principal pentru a-i lua de pe capul mamei, dar totuşi a-i menţine sub control, şi întâmplător să dobândească obiceiurile de obedienţă şi punctualitate atât de necesare mncitorilor. Dacă vreţi să scăpaţi de patriarhie, descotorosiţi-vă de familia nucleară a cărei „muncă în umbră” neplătită face posibilă existenţa sistemului muncii şi îi justifică necesitatea, aşa cum spunea Ivan Ilich. Legată de această strategie este şi abolirea copilăriei şi închiderea şcolilor. Sunt mai mulţi elevi decât muncitori în această ţară. Avem nevoie de copii pe post de profesori, nu de elevi. Ei pot aduce o contribuţie importantă la revoluţia ludică pentru că se joacă mai bine decât adulţii. Adulţii şi copii nu sunt identici dar vor deveni egali prin intermediul interdependenţei. Numai joaca poate umple golul dintre generaţii.
Nu am menţionat încă posibilitatea de a reduce şi mai mult puţinul muncii care ar mai rămâne prin automatizare şi cybernetizare. Toţi savanţii, inginerii şi tehnicienii eliberaţi de plictiseala cercetării în domeniul războiului şi de planificrea învechită, ar trebui să se distreze punând la punct mijloace de a elimina oboseala, plictisitul şi pericolul din activităţi precum mineritul. Fără îndoială că îşi vor găsi şi alte proiecte pentru a se amuza. Poate că vor întemeia sisteme de comunicaţii multi-media globale sau vor înfinţa colonii spaţiale. Poate. Eu însumi nu sunt un mare fan al tehnologiei. Nu, nu aş dori să trăiesc într-un paradis unde totul se rezolvă prin apăsarea unui buton. Nu vreau ca nişte roboţi sclavi să facă totul; aş vrea să fac şi singur unele lucruri. Cred că există loc pentru tehnologia ce reduce munca, dar unul destul de modest. Mărturiile istorice şi pre-istorice nu sunt încurăjătoare. Când tehnologia productivă a trecut de la stadiul de vânători-culegători la agricultură şi apoi la industrie, volumul de muncă a crescut în timp ce îndemânarea şi auto-motivarea au scăzut. Evoluţia ulterioară a industrialismului a accentuat ceea ce Harry Bravermann a numit degradarea muncii. Observatorii inteligenţi au fost întotdeauna conştienţi de asta. John Stuart Mill a scris că toate invenţiile destinate reducerii cantităţii de muncă depuse inventate vreodată nu au scutit muncitorii de vreun moment de muncă. Karl Marx a scris că „ar fi posibil să se scrie o istorie a invenţiilor, făcute din 1830, cu singurul scop de a aproviziona capitalul cu arme împotriva revoltelor clasei muncitoare”. Tehnofilii entuziaşti - Saint-Simon, Comte, Lenin, B.F. Skinner - au fost întotdeauna şi autoritarieni vizibili/evidenţi; altfel spus, tehnocraţi. Ar trebui să fim mai mult decât sceptici la promisiunile făcute de misticii computerelor. Ei muncesc ca nişte câini, aşa că dacă ar fi fost după voia lor, şi noi am face la fel. Dar dacă au de
adus vreo contribuţie particulară mai direct subordonată scopurilor umane decât o simplă tendinţă spre tehnica înaltă (sofisticată), haide-ţi să-i ascultăm.
Ceea ce aş vrea cel mai mult să văd este că munca s-a transformat în joacă. Un prim pas ar fi să renunţăm la noţiuni precum „slujbă” sau „ocupaţie”. Chiar şi activităţi ce au un anumit conţinut ludic, şi-l pierd prin reducerea lor la slujbe pe care anumiţi oameni, şi doar acei oameni, sunt forţaţi să le facă în mod exclusiv. Nu e un fapt ciudat că muncitorii din ferme muncesc din greu pe câmpuri în timp ce stăpânii lor merg acasă în fiecare week-end şi tândălesc. Într-un sistem al distracţiei permanente, vom fi martorii Epocii de Aur a diletanţilor ce va face de ruşine Epoca Renaşterii. Nu vor mai exista slujbe, doar lucuri de făcut şi oameni care să le facă.
Secretul transformării muncii în joacă, aşa cum a demonstrat Charles Fourier, este de a aranja astfel activităţile folositoare încât să se profite de ceea ce diverşi oameni, la timpi diferiţi, se bucură să facă. A da posibilitatea unor oameni de a face lucrurile care le-ar aduce placere, ar fi deajuns pentru a eradica iraţionalităţile şi deformările ce afectează aceste activităţi atunci când sunt reduse la stadiul de muncă. Mie, de exemplu, mi-ar plăcea să predau (dar nu prea mult), dar nu aş vrea să am nişte elevi constrânşi să mă asculte, şi nu mi-aş dori să linguşesc nişte pedanţi patetici în schimbul unor titularizări
În al doilea rând, există unele lucruri care aduc plăcere oamenilor atunci când sunt făcute din când în când, dar nu pentru mult timp, şi în mod sigur nu constant. Poate că îţi place să stai cu copiii pentru câteva ore doar pentru a te bucura de compania lor, dar nu atât de mult ca părinţii lor. Între timp, părinţii apreciază profund timpul liber pe care tu l-ai acordat, cu toate că ar deveni îngrijoraţi, dacă ar fi separaţi de progeniturile lor prea multă vreme. Aceste diferenţe dintre indivizi sunt cele ce fac posibilă o viaţă plină de joacă liberă. Aceleaşi principii se aplică şi în multe alte domenii de activitate, în special în cele primare. Astfel, multor oameni le place să gătească atunci când o fac în voie, nu doar pentru a-şi alimenta corpul pentru a putea munci.
În al treilea rând, unele lucuri care sunt nesatisfăcătoare dacă sunt făcute de unul singur, în împrejurări neplăcute, sau la ordinele unui supraveghetor, devin plăcute, cel puţin pentru un timp, daca aceste circumstanţe sunt schimbate. Asta se aplică probabil într-o anumită măsură tuturor tipurilor de muncă. Oamenii îşi vor folosi ingeniozitatea lor altfel irosită pentru a transforma în joacă cele mai puţin tentante slujbe, în cel mai bun mod posibil. Activităţi ce îi atrag pe oameni nu îi atrag şi pe ceilalţi, dar toată lumea, are o varietate de interese şi un interes pentru varietate. Aşa cum zice proverbul: „Orice o dată”. Fourier era un maestru în a specula cum ar putea să fie folosite înclinaţiile aberante şi perverse într-o societate post-civilizată, numită de el „Armonia”. El era de părere că împăratul Nero ar fi fost în regula, dacă în copilaria sa şi-ar fi satisfăcut pofta de sânge lucrând într-un abator. Copiii mici ce în mod notoriu se bucură să se bălăcească în mizerie ar putea fi organizaţi în „mici hoarde” pentru a curăţa toaletele şi a duce gunoiul, celor mai merituoşi dintre ei acordânduli-se medalii. Nu pledez pentru aceste exemple precise, ci pentru principiul ce se subînţelege din ele, care cred eu că este unidimensional pentru o transformare revoluţionară completă. Tineţi minte că nu trebuie să luăm munca aşa cum o găsim astăzi şi să o asociem cu oamenii potiviţi, unii dintre ei trebuind să fie cu adevărat perverşi.
Dacă tehnologia va juca un rol în toate astea, va fi mai mult de a deschide noi tărâmuri pentru recreere, decât de a automatiza munca şi de a o înlătura din existenţa noastră. Într-o oarecare măsură ne-am putea întoarce la artizanat, pe care William Morris îl consideră un rezultat probabil şi de dorit al revoluţiei comuniste. Arta va fi
redobândită din mâinile snobilor şi colecţionarilor, rolul ei de departament specializat în satisfacerea unui public elitist va fi abolit, iar frumuseţea şi creearea sa înapoiate vieţii căreia i-au fost furate de către muncă. Este un gând trist că urnele greceşti despre care scriem ode şi pe care le expunem în muzee erau folosite la vremea lor doar pentru a depozita ulei de măsline. Mă îndoiesc că obiectele pe care le folosim azi vor avea aceaşi soartă în viitor, asta dacă va mai exista unul. Semnificaţia este că un progres în lumea muncii este imposibil ; iar dacă ar exista ceva în această lume, ar fi tocmai opusul. Nu ar trebui să ezităm să explorăm trecutul pentru a vedea ce are de oferit ; strămoşii nu vor pierde nimic, însă noi vom avea de câştigat.
Reinventarea vieţii zilnice înseamnă trecerea de limitele hărţilor noastre. Există într-adevăr, mult mai multe speculaţii sugestive decât ar crede mulţi oameni. În afară de Fourier şi Morris - şi câte un indiciu pe ici pe colo în Marx - mai există şi scrierile lui Kropotkin, ale sindicaliştilor Pataud si Pouget, ale anarho-comuniştilor vechi (Berkman) şi noi (Bookchin). „Communitas” a fraţilor Goodman este exemplară pentru ilustrarea formelor ce reies din funcţii date (scopuri), şi există câte ceva de recoltat de la vestitorii deseori confuzi ai tehnologiei alternative/corespunzătoare/intermediară, precum Schumacher şi în special Ilich odată ce reuşeşti să vezi deincolo de suprafaţă.
Situaţioniştii-reprezentaţi de „Revoluţia în viaţa de zi cu zi” a lui R. Vainegem şi de „Antologia Internaţionalei Situaţioniste” - sunt atât de cruzi în luciditatea lor încât devin îmbucurători, chiar dacă aceştia nu au ajustat niciodată complet adeziunea consiliilor muncitorilor cu abolirea muncii. Lipsa lor relativă de consecvenţă este mai bună, totuşi decât orice versiune existentă a stângii, a căror credincioşi vor să pară ultimii campioni ai muncii, deoarece dacă nu ar mai exista munca, nu ar mai fi nici muncitori, şi fără muncitori, pe cine ar mai organiza formaţiunile de stânga ?
Aşadar aboliţioniştii vor fi în mare parte pe cont propriu. Nimeni nu poate spune ce vor reieşi din descătuşarea puterii creative ridiculizate de muncă. Orice se poate întâmpla. Dezbaterea obositoare a problemei „libertate vs. necesitate”, împreună cu subtextele sale teologice, se vor rezolva practic de la sine, odată ce producţia de valori folositoare va coexista cu consumul încântător al activităţii de joacă.
Viaţa va deveni un joc, sau mai bine spus, mai multe jocuri, dar nu aşa cum se întâmplă acum, un joc steril. Un act sexual optim este paradigma jocului productiv. Participanţii îşi potentează plăcerile reciproc, nimeni nu ţine scorul, şi toată lumea câştigă. Cu cât dai mai mult, cu atât primeşti mai mult. În viaţa ludică, cea mai bună parte a actului sexual se va răspândi în cele mai bune părţi din viaţa zilnică. Joaca generalizată duce la umplerea vieţii de libidou. Sexul, la rândul său va deveni mai puţin urgent şi disperat, ci mai mult jucăuş. Dacă ne vom juca în mod corect cărţile, vom avea mai multe de luat de la viaţă decât de dat ; dar asta se va întâmpla doar dacă vom juca în mod serios.

Tu esti cel care a cerut sa fie lasat aici, pe acest pamânt, astfel încât sa poti face ceva remarcabil, ceva care conteaza pentru tine, pe care nu ai fi putut sa-l faci nicaieri altundeva si nici altcândva.

Singurul lucru care conteaza cu adevarat la sfârsitul sejurului tau pe acest pamânt, este: Cât de frumos ai iubit? Care a fost calitatea iubirii tale?

Semnul de recunoastere al ignorantei tale este taria cu care crezi în nedreptate si în tragic. Ceea ce omida numeste sfârsitul lumii, adevaratul maestru numeste fluture.

Cum anume vrei sa fii în urma acestei experiente – în ce fel vrei sa te fi schimbat în urma ei? Nimeni nu te obliga sa înveti. Ai sa înveti când ai sa vrei chiar tu.

Pentru ca tu sa te schimbi, e nevoie de o miza mare.

Pacatul originar este limitarea Sinelui. Sa nu o faci.

Ia aminte la ce îti spune viata. Ea îti arata tot ce trebuie sa stii despre ceea ce poti sa devii.

Ceea ce te inspira, te si ghideaza si te si apara.

Argumenteaza în favoarea propriilor limitari si, fara îndoiala, le vei avea.

Singura datorie pe care o ai, oricând, în cursul oricarei vieti, este sa-ti fii loial tie însuti.

Daca alegi siguranta în locul fericirii, o vei avea, însa cu acest pret.

Credinta eronata este sa accepti reguli fara sa fi reflectat întâi asupra lor, când mergi înainte pentru ca stii ca asta asteapta altii de la tine. Vei aduna milioane de astfel de credinte pe parcursul vietii daca nu esti atent.

Câti îsi traiesc vietile fara sa descopere vreodata ceea ce stiu sau ce iubesc? Multi. Este datoria ta sa nu îti îngadui sa ajungi ca ei.

Nu e nimic de iertat când stii ca ai chemat la tine toate experientele din viata ta. De ce te-ai încrunta la cei care îti aduc ceea ce ai cerut?

Cel mai mult ai de învatat când joci împotriva cuiva care te poate învinge.

Esti maestru în ceea ce ai trait, artizan în ceea ce traiesti si amator în ceea ce urmeaza a fi trait.

Când traiesti cu maxima intensitate, nu mai conteaza deznodamântul jocului. Orice s-ar întâmpla, este bine.

O viata este sansa ta de a exprima Sinele în cel mai palpitant si creativ mod cu putinta.

Ti-ai reglat capacitatea de perceptie la o anumita frecventa, si numesti tot ceea ce poti vedea „lumea”. Te poti acorda, oricând, la frecvente noi.

O viata creativa si plina de iubire pentru ceva, orice, este o viata sanatoasa. Când faci ceea ce te face fericit, ai parte de vindecare si siguranta.

Primul pas pentru a te elibera de sub hipnoza este sa constientizezi ca ai fost în stare de hipnoza.

Nu exista paradisuri, nici infernuri, ci doar aceste lumi nesfârsite pe care tu însuti le creezi, pâna în momentul când vei gasi solutia.

Nu exista lucru caruia sa nu-i poti da consimtamântul. Nu exista nimic din care sa nu te poti retrage.

Garantie pentru o viata grea si fericita:

1. Afla ce iubesti sa faci mai mult pe acest pamânt.

2. Fa-l indiferent de ce îti sta în cale.

3. Daruieste ceea ce ai câstigat în urma acestei iubiri, acelora care se arata interesati.

Împartasindu-ti iubirea, vei fi purtat catre o viata magica, a fericirii interioare, pe care altii, neîmpartasind-o cu tine, nu o pot cunoaste.

Daca darurile îti sunt mici, recompensa îti va fi pe masura. Daca daruiesti universuri întregi, recompensa îti va fi imensa.

Învata ceea ce stie magicianul si nu ti se va mai parea magie.

Orice rau ar fi sa-i faci altcuiva, fa-ti-l întâi tie însuti.

Fa ceea ce ai visat întotdeauna sa faci si nu va mai ramâne loc pentru regrete.

Pentru orice întrebare imagineaza-ti cel mai ciudat raspuns, total opus celui la care te-ai putea astepta. Oare este valabil?

Unii spun sa înduri, unii spun sa slujesti, unii sa te detasezi. Dar cine îti spune sa gasesti ceea ce este cu adevarat bine pentru tine?

Sa înveti înseamna sa descoperi ceea ce stiai deja. Sa faci înseamna sa demonstrezi ca, într-adevar, stii. Sa-i înveti pe altii înseamna sa le amintesti ca si ei stiu, la fel de bine ca si tine. Sunteti, cu totii, învatacei, muncitori, învatatori.

Fiecare persoana, întâmplarile vietii tale, toate sunt cu tine pentru ca tu le-ai atras înspre tine. Ceea ce alegi sa faci cu ele este treaba ta.

Cel mai bine stii sa îi înveti pe ceilalti lucrurile pe care tu însuti trebuie sa le înveti cât mai bine.

Sinele este Viata, Iubire, acel Ceva Magnific din centrul fiintei tale. Sinele nu cunoaste limitarile impuse de spatiu-timp, la fel cum nu cunoaste tot ce înseamna griji, temeri sau credinte în viata ta. Acel Ceva nu te priveste ca pe o fiinta bipeda de pe suprafata celei de-a treia planete a unui mic soare de la marginea unei micute galaxii dintr-un univers neînsemnat, înghesuit, pentru o clipita, între miliarde si miliarde de alte universuri. Acel Ceva te vede pe tine oglindindu-I propria imagine si îti ofera libertatea totala de a face tot ce îti doresti, în afara sa mori.

Pentru a aduce ceva în viata ta, imagineaza-ti ca este deja acolo.

Un dezastru înseamna o schimbare. Este o sansa deghizata, în straie prea largi.

Esti liber sa îti schimbi dimensiunea constiintei la întâmplare, prin învataturi sau la vointa. Nu îti este însa permis, sa refuzi sa exprimi viata.

Nu exista o problema care sa nu îti lase un dar dupa ce trece. Cauti problemele pentru ca ai nevoie de darurile lor.

Destinul nu te forteaza sa mergi într-o directie pe care nu vrei sa o urmezi. Tu esti cel care alegi. Destinul tau este în mâinile tale.

Esti o fiinta a luminii. Ai venit din lumina, te vei întoarce în lumina; la fiecare pas te înconjoara lumina fiintei tale nelimitate.

Imagineaza-ti universul minunat si desavârsit. Apoi fii sigur de urmatorul lucru: Sinele si l-a imaginat putin mai bine decât ai facut-o tu.

Continua sa eviti problemele, si nu vei fi niciodata cel care le-a depasit.

Nu ti se va trimite niciodata o dorinta fara sa-ti fie daruita si puterea de a o realiza. S-ar putea însa sa fie nevoie sa depui efort pentru aceasta.

Nu exista greseli. Întâmplarile pe care le atragi asupra ta, oricât de neplacute ar fi ele, sunt absolut necesare pentru ca tu sa înveti ceea ce trebuie sa stii. Fiecare pas pe care îl faci este necesar pentru ca tu sa ajungi la telul pe care ti l-ai propus.

Ti-ai dat propria viata ca sa ajungi cine esti astazi. A meritat?

Viata EXISTA. Acolo te duci atunci când ai nevoie de vindecare, alinare, energie, perspectiva.

Nimeni nu poate ajuta la rezolvarea unei probleme daca problema este ca persoana ce trebuie ajutata nu vrea sa gaseasca rezolvarea.

Nu este nevoie sa te lupti ca sa traiesti potrivit dorintelor tale. Traieste cum vrei si plateste pretul necesar.

Motivul esential pentru care nu ai primit raspunsuri este ca nu ai pus întrebarile.

Principiile se schimba greu, pe nesimtite, si nu stii niciodata sa s-au schimbat pâna când, la un moment dat, ceva ce înainte era bine, acum nu mai pare a fi asa.

“- Osho, este atat de usor sa te indragostesti. Atunci, de ce este atat de greu sa iesi dintr-o relatie amoroasa? Sunt atat de multe discutii, certuri, lacrimi, angoase… Eu nu doresc sa ranesc persoana cu care am fost intr-o asemenea relatie, caci continui sa am sentimente puternice fata de ea. Sunt atat de incurcat. Ce imi poti spune in legatura cu acest subiect?

- Ce mai este de spus? Totul s-a terminat!

Sa te indragostesti este atat de usor. Este ca si cum ai cadea intr-o groapa; sa iesi din ea este mult mai greu. Va trebui insa sa iesiti, caci atunci cand iubirea dispare, groapa devine un iad. Din vechea poveste de iubire nu mai raman decat certurile, cicalealea si tot felul de rautati venite din ambele parti. Nimeni nu doreste sa isi raneasca partenerul sau partenera, dar din cauza ca se simte el insusi ranit, il (o) raneste la randul lui, proiectandu- si nefericirea asupra sa.

Cel mai bun moment de a ma intreba ce aveti de facut nu este acesta, ci cel in care incepeti sa va indragostiti, cand nu ati cazut in groapa. V-as putea invata atunci sa practicati o cu totul alta poveste de iubire, numita a te ridica intru iubire.

In acest caz, nu vor mai exista probleme. Sa te inalti pe aripile iubirii este cat se poate de usor,iar iesirea dintr-o asemenea relatie devine infinit mai usoara, caci te ajuta forta gravitatiei. Sa cazi este usor; de aceea aveti grija ca acesta sa fie pasul doi; pasul unu trebuie sa fie urcusul.
Voi ati facut deja pasul cel simplu; acum urmeaza cel dificil. Sunteti nevoiti sa suportati toate aceste lacrimi si toate aceste conflicte, dar nimic nu va mai putea readuce inapoi iubirea.

Trebuie sa intelegeti un lucru simplu: iubirea aceea de care vorbesti nu poate fi controlata. Ai cazut in eaeste o cadere. Nu te-ai putut impotrivi la vremea respectiva acestul proces. Pur si simplu s-a intamplat. Dar iubirea este ca o briza usoara – vine si pleaca. Acesta nu este un lucru rau, caci daca ar ramane pe loc, ar deveni stagnanta.

Ar trebui sa faceti amandoi un efort pentru a intelege ca desi iubirea a disparut, nu aveti nici un motiv sa va urati reciproc, caci nici unul dintre voi nu este vinovat de distrugerea iubirii. Nici unul dintre voi doi nu a creat iubirea. Ea a venit si a plecat, la fel ca o briza, iar dumneavoastra v-ati bucurat de aceste momente. Nu ati avut capacitatea sa pastrati iubirea, s-o hraniti in voi.Fiti recunoscatori si ajutati-va reciproc sa iesiti din groapa. Atunci cand te afli in groapa, nu ai alta cale. Barbatul ar trebui sa-si dovedeasca buna crestere, oferindu-si umerii pentru a ajuta femeia sa iasa prima din groapa. La sfarsit, se va descurca el cumva, caci este mai puternic.

Din pacate, nimeni nu ma intreaba niciodata nimic inainte sa se indragosteasca. Ciudat lucru! Timp de 35 de ani am asteptat ca cineva sa ma intrebe cum trebuie sa se indragosteasca. Nimeni nu a facut-o insa. Daca ar fi facut-o, i-as fi spus: “nu cadea niciodata in dragoste (fall in love); Ridica-te in iubire”. Iar ridicarea pe aripile iubirii inseamna sa inveti, sa te transformi, sa te maturizezi. In ultima instanta, ea va ajuta sa cresteti, iar doua persoane adulte nu se cearta niciodata. Ele incearca sa se inteleaga una pe cealalta, sa isi resolve problemele.Da, varsta nu-ti da calitatea de adult.Exista multi “adulti” cu care nu te poti intelege.Ei sunt blocati in ei, nu s-au maturizat.
Cine incearca sa se inalte in iubire nu mai cade, caci inaltarea presupune un efort personal, iar iubirea nascuta din acest efort poate fi controlata, fiindca este creatia ta.Caderea in iubire nu presupune nici un efort.

Cand cazi in iubire, ceva se rupe. De aceea, cu cat aceasta iubire dispare mai repede, cu atat mai bine. In caz contrar, risti sa fii prins in o mie si una de capcane. Din cauza lor este atat de dificil sa te desparti mai tarziu de fostul partener de cuplu.
Cand cazi in iubire, nu iti mai pui intrebari. Atunci cand te indragostesti nu par sa existe probleme, dar cand incerci sa te desparti, toate experimentele prin care ai trecut in timpul lunilor si anilor in care ati stat impreuna – si care la vremea respective au reprezentat un mare dar din partea naturii – devin niste obstacole.
Voi va faceti tot felul de promisiuni… Nu se pune problema ca ati mintit sau ca ati incercat in mod constient sa va inselati. In momentele de iubire aceste promisiuni par sa vina direct din inima voastra, dar cand aceste momente dispar… si este obligatoriu sa dispara, caci povestea dumneavostra de iubire a fost o cadere, si nimeni nu poate ramane in aceasta stare o vesnicie. Cineva trebuie sa se ridice din nou. In momentul in care despartirea se apropie, toate aceste promisiuni devin niste obstacole.

Inaltarea in iubire este un proces spiritual.
Caderea in iubire este un proces biologic.

Biologia este oarba. De aceea se spune ca iubirea este oarba. Iubirea de care vorbesc eu nu este insa oarba si poate fi cu usurinta practicata de oricine. Nu trebuie decat un mic efort…
Iubirea trebuie sa se nasca din tacere, din luciditate, din meditatie. Ea nu inlantuie niciodata. Cum ar putea crea iubirea niste catuse pentru persoana iubita? Dimpotriva, ea confera libertate din ce in ce mai mare. Cu cat iubirea devine mai puternica, cu atat mai mare devine aceasta stare de libertate; cu cat mai mult accepti persoana partenerului asa cum este. Nu mai incerci sa schimbi aceasta persoana, te schimbi pe tine si ea te va insoti.
Una din cele mai dramatice probleme ale lumii in care traim se datoreaza faptului ca indragostitii incearca sa schimbe persoana pe care o iubesc. Ei nu inteleg ca daca aceasta se va schimba, iubirea lor va disparea, caci ei s-au indragostit de ea asa cum arata acum, nu intr-o alta ipostaza.

Inaltarea in iubire iti permite sa intelegi ca fiecare are dreptul la propriul sau teritoriu, pe care tu nu ai dreptul sa-l incalci. Daca iubirea echivaleaza cu libertatea, necesitatea despartirii dispare. Ideea separatiei apare numai atunci cand vezi ca te transformi intr-un sclav, caci nimanui nu-i place sclavia.
Dar voi nu ma intrebati ce trebuie sa faceti atunci cand va aflati pe fundul gropii pentru a iesi afara din ea. Un lucru este cert: eu nu am de gand sa intru in groapa alaturi de voi pentru a va ajuta sa iesiti de acolo! Din aceasta perspectiva, va trebui sa va descurcati singuri. Daca as intra sa va ajut, voi doi ati iesi, iar eu as ramane pe fundul gropii! Iar eu nu cunosc pe nimeni pe care sa-l intreb: “bine, dar eu cum ies de aici?”
De altfel, eu nu am acceptat niciodata sfaturile pe care nu le-am cerut personal. Sfaturile sunt sigurul lucru pe care toata lumea se grabeste sa-l ofere pe gratis, dar nimenu nu-si da osteneala sa le urmeze. De ce ar face-o? Sfaturile pe care nu le-ai cerut nu pot fi prea intelepte.

Un om intelept nu incearca niciodata sa isi impuna ideile in fata altor persone. Daca cineva il intreaba, el isi spune parerea. Nimeni nu este insa obligat sa o urmeze. Nu este ceva care “trebuie” facut.
De aceea, tot ce va pot spune este ca v-ati oferit pana acum unul altuia numeroase momente frumoase, de neuitat. Uitati tot ce v-ati promis reciproc. Acele lucruri au fost adevarate la vremea cand au fost rostite, dar timpul le-a schimbat. Dumneavostra insiva v-ati schimbat. Va aflati amandoi la o intersectie, gata sa o apucati in directii diferite. Poate ca nu va veti mai intalni niciodata. De aceea, despartiti-va intr-o maniera cat mai nobila. Daca veti intelege ca despartirea este absolut necesara, indiferent de maniera in care se va produce, atunci de ce sa nu o faceti cu gratie?

Ati putea trai in amintirea celuilalt, la fel cum si el ar putea trai in amintirea dumneavoastra. Intr-un fel, momentele traite impreuna vor continua sa se imbogateasca de-a pururi. Dar pentru asta, va trebui sa va despartiti frumos.
Acest lucru nici macar nu este dificil, daca ati inteles ce este iubirea – care este un fenomen intr-adevar dificil. V-ati indragostit fara sa va ganditi, dar ati inteles foarte rapid ca iubirea a disparut. Acceptati acest adevar si nu va invinovatiti reciproc, caci nimeni nu este responsabil. Ajutati-va unul pe celalalt si despartiti-va prieteni.
Atunci cand se despart, fostii iubiti devin de multe ori dusmani. Ciudat mod de a-ti arata recunostinta. Cei doi ar trebui sa ramana prieteni. Cand iubirea se transforma in prietenie, sentimentele de vinovatie dispar, la fel ca si senzatia ca ai fost inselat, exploatat. In realitate, nu se pune problema de exploatare. Pur si simplu, ati fost orbit de energia biologica.
Eu vorbesc de alt tip de iubire. Aceasta nu se incheie intr-o relatie de prietenie, ci incepe printr-o asemenea relatie. Ea incepe in tacere, in luciditate. Aceasta iubire este propria voastra creatie, deci nu este oarba. O asemenea iubire poate dura de-a pururi, devenind din ce in ce mai profunda.

Sensibilitatea ei este imensa. Cel care practica acest tip de iubire simte nevoia partenerului inainte ca acesta sa inceapa sa vorbeasca. Am cunoscut personal cateva cupluri(un nr. foarte mic ce-i drept) care nu au cazut in iubire, ci s-au inaltat pe aripile ei. Cel mai miraculous aspect mi s-a parut faptul ca acesti oameni nu mai trebuia sa isi vorbeasca. Daca barbatului ii era sete, iubita ii aducea apa, fara ca el sa ceara acest lucru. Totul se desfasura prin sincronicitate, telepatie. Daca persoanei iubite ii era sete, la fel trebuie sa-ti fie si tie. Transferul de idei si senzatii se produce instantaneu. Cuvintele nu mai sunt necesare. Jocul energiilor este direct; nu mai are nevoie de limbaj.

O asemenea iubire nu asteapta nimic de la celalalt. Ea ii este recunoscatoare ca acesta accepta ce are ea de oferit. Nu se simte amenintata, pur si simplu pentru ca nu exista nici o amenintare la adresa ei.Intr-o asemenea iubire, sexul se poate intampla sa apara spontan, dar apoi va disparea cu lunile, iar in final va disparea cu totul. De altfel, chiar si atunci cand se produce, el nu mai are nimic sexual. Este doar o maniera de a fi impreuna, de a fuziona cu celalalt,un effort de a atinge profunzimea celuilalt. Sexualitatea nu mai are nimic de-a face cu reproducerea biologica.

Cei doi iubiti inteleg treptat ca in timpul actului amoros nu fuzioneaza decat trupurile lor. De aceea, incetul cu incetul, sexul dispare din viata lor, iar intre ei incepe sa se produca un alt tip de intalnire, la nivelul energiilor. O simpla tinere de maini poate insemna mai mult decat orice orgasm, caci este suficienta pentru ca energiile lor sa fuzioneze.

Orgasmul sexual este un act fizic. El se refera la nivelul cel mai de jos. De aceea, gresiti daca il numiti iubire. Iubirea este un cuvant atat de frumos. Atunci cand spuneti: “m-am indragostit (am cazut in iubire)”, voi ii dati o conotatie atat de urata. Macar rostiti adevarul. Spuneti: “am cazut in sex”. Iubirea nu poate decat sa te ridice. Niciodata nu iti pune piedica.
Dar mai intai de toate va trebui sa iesiti din groapa. Ajutati-va unul pe celalalt. Biologia nu va va ajuta prea mult in aceasta directie. Incercati mai degraba sa fiti umani. Intelegeti ca iubirea care v-a unit candva, nu mai exista. Ochii vi s-au deschis in sfarsit. Nu incercati sa-l amagiti pe celalalt ca inca il mai iubiti,ca mai simtiti ceva pentru el, dar ce puteti face?… Acest comportament impocrit nu foloseste la nimic. Spuneti-i direct: “sentimentele pe care le aveam pentru tine au disparut. Imi par sincer rau. Mi-as fi dorit sa continui sa te iubesc, dar aceste sentimente, au disparut. Stiu foarte bine ca nici tu nu ma mai iubesti”. De indata ce ati inteles amandoi acest lucru, ajutati-va unul pe celalalt, ca doi oameni adevarati, sa iesiti afara din groapa.

Atat timp cat va veti ajuta reciproc, nu vor fi probleme. Din pacate, in asemenea cazuri fiecare doreste sa iasa el primul din groapa, fara sa-I pese ce va face celalalt. Mai rau, fiecare il trage pe celalalt in jos, incercand sa profite de el. Explicatia este simpla: teama. Vechea iubire a disparut, dar noul nu a aparut inca. Nimic nou nu se poate petrece intr-o groapa. Mai intai de toate trebuie sa iesi afara din ea. De aceea, exista aceasta teama de necunoscut. Trecutul a fost atat de frumos incat ai dori sa-l repeti. Incerci chiar sa fortezi acest lucru; celalalt incearca si el. Dar aceste lucruri nu pot fi controlate.Voi n-ati creat iubire, ati creat sex.Incepem sa vorbim despre iubire cand suntem in afara dependentelor.Ura, minciuna,certurile,ranchiuna, nu au nicio legatura cu iubirea.

O iubire fortata nu are nimic de-a face cu iubirea. Ce fel de sarut poate fi acela dat sub amenintarea cutitului? Buzele se pot atinge, dar privirile sunt atintite asupra lamei cutitului… O iubire fortata nu poate fi numita iubire. Si amandoi stiti foarte bine ce este iubirea, caci ati avut parte de ea, fie si numai pentru cateva momente. De aceea, nu va veti putea amagi reciproc. Ajutati-va unul pe celalalt sa iesiti din groapa si despartiti-va frumos. Iar data viitoare incercati sa nu mai cadeti, ci sa va ridicati. Nu va mai lasati dominati factorul biologic. Ascultati de vocea constiintei.”

Un nou argument in favoarea vegetarianismului.
Acest argument contine atat motivatii legate de sanatate, etica cat si legate de protectia mediului.
De cele mai multe ori, nu vrem sa stim cine plateste ca noi sa mancam ieftin, mult si bine. Dar cred ca filmul ne arata exact cine plateste cel mai mare pret. Cateva sute de mii de pasari, care au o viata foarte scurta si plina de suferinta. De sanatatea noastra nici nu mai vorbesc. Imaginile sunt graitoare.
Cel mai socant este insa faptul ca aceasta filmare provine din “leaganul democratiei” sau dintr-una dintre cele mai evoluate tari din lume. Tot acest filmulet ne arata discrepanta dintre REALITATE si PUBLICITATE.

Este narat cu senzualitate si chiar umor. Destul de erotic dar rezervat in a deveni explicit.
Multi barbati, cei tineri in mod special, ar avea de castigat din vizionarea acestui film, unde femeia este atat de respectata, unde femeia este invatatorul si inteleptul. Barbatii ar trebui sa vada acest film si sa isi imagineze ca ar fi minunat sa fie asa norocosi. Ne e un film perfect, dar e fermecator si are enunturi importante referitoare la inalta constienta a sexualitatii si afectiunii... in mod special pentru cei tineri.

Un documentar deosebit, care arata cum in timpul administratiei Bush, gasca de la putere a fortat nota si a redefinit tortura in incercarea de a nu intra in bucluc, tinand cont de ceea ce se pregatea in spatele usilor inchise de mult timp, in directia declansarii valului de crime de razboi. Cu ajutorul prietenilor, au reusit sa scape deocamdata.
Guantanamo, Afganistan....marturii, imagini, crime de razboi, suferinta mentala, tortura fizica in cele mai abominabile forme...
Moartea in astfel de situatii este preferabila ramanerii in viata si a asista fara speranta la tot ceea ce ti se intampla.
